Softball Drops a Pair to IU Indy and USC Upstate

Canisius softball dropped a pair of games to IU Indy and USC Upstate Sunday at the USC Upstate Tournament in Spartanburg, S.C. The IU Indy Jaguars defeated the Golden Griffins 9-1 in five innings in the first game of the day, before the host Spartans took the nightcap 11-3 in five innings. 

Canisius fell to 1-3 on the season, while IU Indy improved to 2-5. USC Upstate is now 7-1 on the year.

GAME ONE RECAP
IU Indy got on the board first in the bottom of the second after Kenne Cowan singled and Karley Kavanaugh scored on a throwing error. The Jaguars extended their lead to 3-0 in the home half of the fourth thanks a two-run homer off the bat of Callie Dickerson.

The Griffs got on the board in the top of the fifth after Tabitha von Kolen scored on a throwing error by the Jaguars catcher on an Ella Johel steal attempt.

IU Indy put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring six times in the frame to end the contest early at 9-1. Paige McPhearson and Molly Cable both singled for IU Indy, while Dickerson doubled and Tori Candler reached on an error to implement the mercy rule victory for the Jaguars.

Senior Toria Kover got the start in the circle for Canisius and threw 4.1 innings, where she fanned three while allowing nine runs, seven of which were unearned.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Griffs got off to a quick start in the nightcap, putting up two runs in the top of the first on an Emily Ilano RBI-single that scores Von Kolen and Alyssa Cloutier.

The Spartans answered right back in the bottom of the first with six runs. Abigail Pippen doubled to drive in two runs, Sophia Kardatzke had an RBI-single, Abby Polk doubled to plate one run and Georgia Preddy drove in a pair with a single.

USC Upstate's Kardatzke and Carson Shaw hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the second to extend the USC Upstate lead to six at 8-2, but Johel cut into the Spartans' lead with a solo home run in the top of the third to make the score 8-3.

USC Upstate tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth and then scored a single run in the home-half of the fifth to close out the game, 11-3.

Freshman Mikaila Obenrader got the start in the circle, where she allowed eight runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings of work. Olivia Manchester came in relief to throw 3.0 innings, striking out one and allowing three runs on four hits.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius falls to 3-1 in its series lead over IU Indy while falling to 0-5 against USC Upstate.
Ella Johel and Morgan Cook recorded the Golden Griffins two hits against IU Indy.
Natalie Quonce recorded her first career hit against USC Upstate.
• Canisius recorded their season-high in hits with six against USC Upstate.

UP NEXT
Canisius will wrap up the USC Upstate Tournament on Monday, facing off against USC Upstate at 2:30 p.m.
