Swimming and Diving Competes in UB Invite

The Canisius swimming and diving teams closed out the fall semester with an appearance in the UB Invite this weekend at the Alumni Arena Natatorium in Buffalo.

Competing against Big Four rival Buffalo and Battle of the Bridge foe Niagara, the Golden Griffin men were led by a 1-2-3 finish in the 50 fly as freshman Peyton Gilliland took first (22.85), senior Toby Mayfield placed second (23.77) and freshman Hubert Hawkins claimed third (24.64).

Sophomore Giovanni Poggio placed second in the 50 breaststroke (26.89), while freshman Alex Schuler placed second (24.50) and Herman Zilch took third (27.83) in the 50 back.

Junior Tom McCabe registered a second-place finish in the men's 100 free (46.87) and turned in a third-place result in the men's 200 free (1.42.46).

Sophomore Cameron Upchurch took second (21.23) in the men's 50 free and recorded a third-place result in the men's 100 free (47.00).  

Senior Sam Vidal claimed second in the men's 100 breast, touching the wall in 55.82, just four one-hundredths of a second behind Niagara's Lance Rafel Cruz (55.78).

Junior Elliot Somers, Vidal, Mayfield and McCabe placed second in the men's 400 medley relay with a time of 3:22.95. Somers, Vidal, Gilliland and Mayfield also placed second in the men's 200 medley relay, touching the wall in 1:32.45. Somers, McCabe, Mayfield and Vidal also placed second in the men's 800 free relay, touching the wall in 6:53.77.

In men's diving, freshman Leo Rodriguez took first in both the 1-meter (181.50) and 3-meter (148.35).

On the women's side, sophomore Daphne Mead placed second in the women's 100 fly, touching the wall in 56.06. Mead also claimed second in the women's 200 back with a time of 2:03.39.

Junior Evie Leighton claimed third in the women's 200 free (1:51.46).

Senior Emily Blake, junior Andi Mackey, Mead and Leighton placed third in the women's 800 free relay with a time of 7:46.76. Mead, Blake, Leighton and Hannah Brainard posted a third-place finish in the women's 400 free relay, touching the wall in 3:33.11.

Canisius returns to action Jan. 10 when it hosts Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Rider in a 10 a.m. dual meet at the Burt Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo.
