Women’s Soccer Cruises to Victory over Saint Peter’s on Senior Day

Canisius used goals from five different players as it cruised to a 5-1 victory over Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo.

Senior Skylar Cornell, juniors Elizabeth Cavanaugh and Jazmin Herrera, sophomore Azaria Fagan and freshman Emilia Nuttall all found the back of the net for the Golden Griffins (6-8-1, 6-4-1 MAAC). Junior Jessica Whitaker dished out three assists while Fagan also pitched in a helper as both played finished with three-point days.

Joana Dias accounted for the lone goal for the Peacocks (5-9-3, 2-8-1 MAAC). Emma Lopes and Bergljot Kristinsdottir split time in goal for the visitors, combining for five saves.

Cornell opened the scoring in the 30th minute when she played a ball from the left side that went over the head of Lopes and into the right side of the net for her third goal of the season.
Cavanaugh doubled the Griffs advantage in the 44th minute, tapping home a pass from junior Mary Molloy from close range to make it a 2-0 lead for the Griffs.

Dias notched her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 50th minute to bring Saint Peter's within one, but Nuttall restored Canisius' two-goal cushion less than eight minutes later, heading home a Whitaker free kick for her first collegiate tally.

Fagan stretched the Griffs cushion to three with a rebound goal on an initial attempt from junior Maggie Cregan while Herrera closed out scoring in the final minute to regulation, capitalizing on Whitaker's cross to notch her first collegiate goal to determine the four-goal margin of victory.
