Geneseo Sweeps Swimming and Diving

Geneseo spoiled Canisius' first home meet of the 2025-26 campaign by sweeping a dual meet in collegiate swimming and diving action Friday at the Burt Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo.

The Knights won the women's event by a final score of 175-125, while the Geneseo men's team defeated the Golden Griffins by the score of 153-145.

For the second-straight week, the Canisius women's 200 medley relay consisting of sophomore Daphne Mead and juniors Cassandra Ercoli, Leyna Swanson and Evie Leighton started the night off with a victory, as the Blue and Gold unit took first with a time of 1:46.85.

Mead, the reigning MAAC Female Swimmer of the Week, won three individual events on the night as well, starting with the 100-backstroke event, where she touched the wall in 58.15. The Baltimore, Md., native touched the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke race with a time of 2:06.98, a time that was 6.38 seconds faster than junior teammate SaraJo Gardner, who took second with her time of 2:13.39. Mead then capped off her night by winning the 200-yard IM race with a time of 2:09.55, a time that was 5.15 seconds faster than the event's second-place finisher.

Leighton won two individual races as well, claiming first place in the 200 free with her time of 1:55.37, and she later placed first in the 100-yard freestyle race with a time of 53.38.

In the men's event, freshman Gavin Ray won his first two collegiate events on Friday after he placed first in the 1,000 free (10:03.59) and the 500 free with his time of 4:52.56. Fellow freshman Luke Nagle placed second in both the 1,000 free (10:08.69) and 500 free (4:52.73).

Junior Tom McCabe and senior Sam Vidal made it a 1-2 finish for the Griffs in the 200 free, with McCabe placing first (1:44.47) and Vidal taking second (1.44.78). Junior Elliot Somers and freshman Alex Schuler turned in another 1-2 result in the men's 100 back as Somers (51.47) claimed first and Schuler placed second (53.95). Somers also won the 200-yard backstroke as well by more than six seconds with his time of 1:54.17.

Senior Toby Mayfield recorded a pair of wins on the night for the Blue and Gold, as he took first in the 200 butterfly, placing nearly five seconds ahead of the second-place finisher with a time of 1:55.93. Mayfield came back and won the 100-yard butterfly race as well, touching the wall with a time of 50.74.

Canisius travels to Vestal, N.Y., on Nov. 1 for a dual meet against Binghamton. Start time for the meet between the Griffs and Bearcats is slated for 1 p.m. at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center.
