Men’s Soccer Exhibition Ends in Draw against Mercyhurst

Junior Glodie Mata recorded an assist in the first half and an unassisted goal in the second half, allowing Canisius to play to a 2-2 draw against Mercyhurst in collegiate men's soccer exhibition action Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Junior Michael Switala opened the scoring for the Golden Griffins in the 19th minute after receiving a cross from junior Kyle Pollard and a secondary assist from Mata. Freshman goalkeeper Alejandro Alanís tallied two saves with a full 90 minutes of playing time.

The Lakers were able to take an early lead in the contest after Alvar Silva collected his own shot off the crossbar and scored an unassisted goal in the 16th minute.

The Griffs answered with their own attack three minutes later as Pollard and Mata set up Switala with a shot from the middle of the penalty box to tie the game at 1-1.

Mata took the lead for the Griffs early into the second half as he corralled a loose ball and broke away from the Laker defense. He easily deposited an unassisted goal past the Laker goaltender in the 52nd minute, putting the Griffs up 2-1.

Mercyhurst tied the game in the 69th minute as Ryan Mrvcic skated past the Griffs defense and assisted Dylan Sumner with an equalizing goal. The exhibition ended with the score knotted up at 2-2.

Canisius out-shot Mercyhurst by a margin of 13 to 10 while also gaining a 6 to 2 advantage on corner kicks.
