Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Closes Regular Season with Split Against Buffalo

Canisius senior Christie McGee-Ross homered and scored two runs in her final home game at the Demske Sports Complex, fellow senior Gianna Fazolarri went 3-for-4 and senior pitcher Megan Giese came on in relief and earned a nine-out save to help lead the Golden Griffins to a 2-0 win over cross-town rival Buffalo in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday evening.

In the day's first game, Buffalo scored seven runs between the third and fourth innings to earn a 10-2 victory over the Golden Griffins. Canisius closed out the regular season with an overall record of 20-20 while Buffalo moved to 16-29 on the year with the split.

GAME TWO RECAP
McGee-Ross broke a scoreless tie in the home-half of the third with a lead-off homer to centerfield, her second home run of the day and her ninth on the season. That single run would be enough for Canisius starter Olivia Manchester, who earned her first career victory in the circle after she did not allow a run through four innings despite giving up six hits to Buffalo's hitters.

In the top of the fifth, Giese came on in relief and picked up her team-leading third save of the season after she held Buffalo hitless through the game's final three frames while fanning four. Canisius tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after junior Rosie Gomez singled to center, allowing McGee-Ross to score from second base.

Canisius racked up nine hits in the game two victory, with Fazzolarri leading the way after she went 3-for-4 with three singles. McGee-Ross and Gomez also had multi-hit efforts in the nightcap, as the Griffs closed out their 2024 home slate with a 10-3 record for the year.

GAME ONE RECAP
Buffalo scored five times in the third, and added a pair of runs in the fourth to jump out to a 7-0 lead, en route to the 10-2 victory in the first game of the non-conference twinbill.  In the third inning, Buffalo sent 11 batters to the plate and took advantage of six walks, three of which came with the bases loaded. In the fourth, the Bulls added two runs on a two-run home run by starting pitcher Alexis Lucyshyn to make the score 7-0 in favor of the visiting team.

Canisius answered with a pair of runs in the home-half of the fifth to trim the UB lead to 7-2. After sophomore Madysen Burkey earned a one-out walk, McGee-Ross came to the plate and smacked her first homer of the day, a two-run shot, to put the Blue and Gold on the scoreboard. However, that would be all the offense the Griffs could muster in the opening game, as Lucyshyn earned her team-leading ninth win of the season in the circle for the Bulls after she went the distance and gave up two runs on five hits while striking out 12.

McGee-Ross ended the first game by going 2-for-4 with the two-run home run and a run scored. Junior Alyssa Cloutier had a stolen base in the losing effort for the Griffs, her team-leading 11th steal of the season.
