Softball Completes the Weekend Sweep of Saint Peter's

Home runs from seniors Christie McGee-Ross and Gianna Fazzolari propelled Canisius to a 3-2 victory over Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference softball action Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Golden Griffins improved to 11-12 overall on the season and 6-2 in league play as they completed the weekend sweep with Sunday's victory. The Peacocks, meanwhile, dropped to 12-18 and 2-4 in conference play.

Canisius struck first in the bottom of the third inning with a solo homer off the bat of Fazzolari, her third long ball of the series, to give the Griffs the lead.

Saint Peter's answered back in the top of the fourth inning as a single to right field from Jess Forte brought home Kayla Talber and Cara McNulty to give the Peacocks a 2-1 lead.

McGee-Ross restored Canisius' lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run shot to right center field and also scored junior Alyssa Cloutier to make it a 3-2 ballgame.

That was all the support that senior pitcher Megan Giese needed, allowing just one Saint Peter's base runner over the final three innings to preserve the the Griffs one-run lead and complete the weekend sweep.

In seven innings of work, Giese allowed two runs on five hits and one walk to go with five strikeouts as she picked up her 10th win of the season.

McGee-Ross, Fazzolari and junior Emily Ilano each finished with two hits apiece. Junior Rosie Gomez tallied the other hit for the Griffs in the contest.
