Softball Tops Ball State on the First Day of the EKU Colonel Classic

The Canisius softball team opened up its second road trip of the 2024 campaign with a 3-2 win against Ball State Friday at the EKU Colonel Classic in Richmond, Ky

The Golden Griffins improved their record to 3-5 on the year while the Cardinals saw their record drop to 6-10.

Junior Rosie Gomez went 2-for-2 with a RBI to pace a Canisius lineup that finished with six base hits in the contest. Senior Megan Giese pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and four walks while striking out eight.

Haley Wynn recorded three base hits in four plate appearances to go along with two runs scored for Ball State. Jessica Hoffman went 2-for-4 while two other Ball State players finished with one hit apiece. Francys King took the loss in the circle, surrendering three runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks. King finished the contest with four strikeouts.

The Cardinals capitalized first in the top of the third when Wynn scored on an attempted double steal to give Ball State the 1-0 lead.

Following the opening run of the contest, the game went into a lengthy weather delay that lasted nearly three hours before resuming around 1:30 p.m.

Gomez brought the Griffs level in the home half of the fourth, hitting a solo home run down the left field line to tie the game at 1-1.

Ball State regained the lead in the top of the fifth with Wynn scoring on a throwing error to grab a 2-1 lead.
The Griffs tied the game in the home half of the fifth, with Sydney Costan reaching first on a bunt and scoring on a sacrifice fly from fellow senior Christie McGee-Ross

Canisius plated the winning run in the bottom of the sixth when Giese hit a sacrifice fly to score Fazzolari to put the Griffs in front, 3-2.

Giese made the one-run lead stand, working around a pair of two-out base runners and a wild pitch to strand the game-tying run on third base and give the Griffs the one-run victory.
