Softball Heads to Kentucky for the EKU Colonel Classic

• The Canisius softball program begins its second tournament of the 2024 campaign at the EKU Colonel Classic. The Golden Griffins will face host Eastern Kentucky, Ball State and Purdue Fort Wayne, Mar. 1-3.

• This is the 4th and 5th meetings between the Golden Griffins and the Cardinals. Ball State leads the series 3-0. The teams last played twice in 2018 which saw the Cardinals take down the Golden Griffins 11-4 and 2-0.

• This is the 5th and 6th meeting between the Colonels and Golden Griffins. The series is currently tied 2-2. The two teams played twice last in 2019 which saw EKU take both games 12-4 and 11-9 respectively. The Griffs last win against the Colonels came in 2010, 14-6 in five innings.

• This will be the first time the Golden Griffins and Mastodons face off against each other.

• The Golden Griffins went 2-5 in their first weekend of the season splitting with Queens and George Washington, while falling to Boston University and Charlotte.

• Senior Christie McGee-Ross had an unbelievable day at the plate during the doubleheader against George Washington on Feb. 20. The outfielder went 6-7 with a walk, tacking on two triples, a double and an RBI. She currently leads the team in batting average and hits.

• Senior Gianna Fazzolari knocked in her 100th career run during the past tournament and went deep to record her 20th career home run which now puts her second all-time in program history.

• Senior Megan Giese and junior Kate Wiggins have been holding down the pitching for the Griffs. Wiggins leads the team with a 2.19 ERA, while Giese has 22 strikeouts which puts her 13 away from 500 in her career.

Up Next
Following the five-game trip in Kentucky, the Griffs will have the week off before traveling to State College, Pa, to take part in the Penn State Invitational. The Griffs will face host Penn State, Lehigh and Cornell, beginning on March 15 against Lehigh and Cornell.
