Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Closes Out Season with Win Over Niagara

Graduate student Luke Szablewski netted an 84th-minute goal to lift Canisius to a 1-0 victory over Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara Wednesday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The victory improved the Golden Griffins record to a 4-8-4 overall and 2-3-3 in MAAC play. The Purple Eagles remained winless in conference play with an 0-7-1 MAAC record and 2-12-2 ledger overall.

The first half was marred by multiple delays and injuries, resulting in a 0-0 game going into the break. Niagara outshot the Griffs in this half, 8-6, but Canisius put the most shots on target with two tries on goal in the first half.

In the 58th minute, a Niagara player was issued a red card, giving the Griffs a man advantage for the remaining 32 minutes of play. The Purple Eagles were able to hold the Griffs at bay until the final minutes of the game, when Szablewski received a pass from graduate Riley Wagner to break the deadlock and close out the season on a high note.

Senior Jack Petrie made two saves in the contest, while Niagara's goalkeeper Jamie Barry recorded four.
