Goals from senior Emma Oliphant and graduate student Alicia Zamora helped lead Canisius to a 2-1 victory with Sacred Heart in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.
The Golden Griffins moved to 10-2-2 overall and 7-1-2 in conference play with the victory while the Pioneers slipped to 3-9-3 and 3-4-2 in MAAC action with the setback.
Oliphant got the Griffs on the board first in the 40th minute burying home a pass from fellow senior Madeline Weltin. Sophomore Sofia Ruffa was also credited with an assist on the play.Â
Zamora extended the Canisius lead to 2-0Â with a penalty kick goal in the 62nd minute. A foul on Sacred Heart's Theanna Burnett in the box on Weltin led to the Griffs penalty kick.
The Pioneers cut the Griffs lead in half in the 79th minute on their first shot on goal of the contest when Emily Hood beat Griffs goaltender Jordan Spencer off a pass from Shea Kelleher.Â
Sacred Heart was unable to net the equalizer, as the Canisius defense held the Pioneers without a shot on goal over the remainder of the contest to pick up its 10th win of the season.Â
