Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Sweeps Quinnipiac Monday

Junior Gianna Fazzolari hit a go-ahead two-run homer in game one while graduate Alexis Churchill tossed her fifth career complete game shutout at Canisius defeated Quinnipiac, 4-2 and 11-0, Monday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action from the Quinnipiac Softball Field in Hamden, Conn.

The Golden Griffins (13-12, 3-1 MAAC) improve to 17-4 against the Bobcats all-time and have their best start to conference play since the 2015 season.

Quinnipiac (13-11, 2-2 MAAC) falls to .500 to start the MAAC slate after sweeping Niagara Sunday in the opening games.

Game 1 Recap
Giese and Quinnipiac hurler Sydney Horan both threw complete games in the pitcher's duel, as the two combined to allow just nine hits across the seven innings.

Giese also struck out a season-high 11 batters in the win, her eighth career double-digit strikeout game and seventh against a MAAC opponent.

The host Bobcats grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the second when catcher Hannah Davis stepped to the plate with one on and two out.

Davis sent the 1-1 pitch from Giese over the fence in the left-center gap for the early lead.

Canisius would later tie the contest at a pair of runs each with a two-spot of their own in the top of the fifth.
With a runner on third and one out, Giese helped herself by sending the first pitch she saw into left for the RBI base knock, cutting Quinnipiac's lead to one.

Later in the inning, junior Sydney Costan reached base on a fielding error by the Bobcat's first baseman, which brought pinch runner Madysen Burkey around to score from second to tie the game.

After junior Destiny Falquez opened the seventh with a leadoff double, backstop Gianna Fazzolari stepped to the dish.

The third year clobbered the 2-2 pitch well over the left field fence, putting Canisius up by a pair.

Quinnipiac looked to mount a comeback with a one-out double off the bat of Mary Fogg, but Giese was able to escape any further trouble for her eighth win of the season.

Game 2 Recap
Churchill was dominant in the circle, allowing just four hits and a pair of walks in the victory for the Griffs.

Canisius opened the second game with a four-run first inning, sending all nine batters to the dish.

After Alfaro began the contest with a single, McGee-Ross hit a single to center field that was misplayed by Fogg, allowing both runners to cross the plate.

Three batters later, Falquez drove in her first run of the game via the sacrifice fly to left to score Rivait.

In the next at bat, Gomez singled to left to plate Fazzolari to cap off the inning.

Following a Rivait RBI single in the second to give Canisius a 5-0 lead, the Griffs broke the contest open in the top of the seventh.

Leading 6-0, Falquez drove in her second and third runs of the game on a single to center before Gomez doubled to left to plate sophomore Emily Ilano, who was pinch running for Falquez.

Junior Sydney Costan helped Canisius reach double digit runs for the second time this weekend with a two-run single of her own.

• Giese struck out a season-high 11 batters in the first game, which was her eighth career double-digit strikeout game. Seven of those contests have come against MAAC opponents.
