Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Sacred Heart in Regular Season Finale

A 9-1 run during the first half broke open a close contest and sparked Sacred Heart to a 15-8 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at Campus Stadium in Fairfield, Conn.

Jake Ward held game-high honors with five goals and seven points to pace the Pioneers (5-9, 5-4 MAAC). Jake Garb finished with four points on two goals and two assists while Michael Moreschi (3a), Sal Miccio (3g) and Skyler Wilde (3g) chipped in three points each. Nicky Casano was 16-of-25 at the faceoff X with six ground balls.

Redshirt sophomore Colin Kelly tallied two goals and added an assist for the Golden Griffins (2-13, 1-7 MAAC). Senior Nathan Conry and freshman Kevin Carney finished with a goal and an assist each while four players chipped in individual tallies. Sophomore Tommy Kunz made 11 saves in goal for Canisius.

With the game tied at 2-2 during the early stages of the first quarter, Ward struck for an unassisted effort at the 8:28 mark of the opening frame to put the Pioneers in front and ignite the game-changing stretch that lasted until the 4:35 mark of the second quarter and gave SHU an 11-3 cushion.

Ward led the way for the home team during the 9-1 run, pacing the Pioneers with a trio of tallies while Miccio pitched in a pair of markers.

Canisius would halt the SHU spurt thanks to goals from Kelly and senior Nathan Conry, but goal with 1:11 to play in the opening frame from Skyler Wilde sent the Pioneers into the locker room with a 12-5 advantage.

The second half proved to be a defensive battle, with the teams exchanging six total goals over the game's final 30 minutes, allowing SHU to secure the seven-goal victory.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Post Game Comments
"Our miscues today allowed them to build a lead we couldn't overcome. Coming out of the half, we carried the pace of play, but couldn't find the back of the net early enough. Our effort as a group was there throughout, but we needed to make plays at key moments and were unable to do so."

"We are thankful for the contributions of our seniors who we have seen grow over their time here at Canisius. The work towards next year begins now."

Game Notes
• Saturday's game served as the third all-time meeting between Canisius and Sacred Heart and the first since the 2001 season.
• Sacred Heart outshot Canisius by a 53-36 margin for the contest, highlighted by a 35-14 advantage in the first half.
• With his two-goal effort on Saturday, Kelly became just the fifth player in program history to reach the 40-goal plateau in a season. He is the first to accomplish the feat since Cort Knodel in 1997.
• With his 11 face-off wins, freshman face-off specialist Micah Hanson became the program's single-season record holder with 194. He surpassed Joe Maier, who set the program mark with 187 back in 1996.
• Kunz recorded double-digit saves in a game for the 13th time this season as he finished with 11 stops on Saturday.
