Game Recap: Softball |

Gomez Powers Softball to Sweep of Fairfield

Canisius sophomore Rosie Gomez hit a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning in the first game, and then she blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning in the game two, as the Golden Griffins swept Fairfield in MAAC softball action Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

Gomez's walk-off blast to left field in the first game completed the Griffs' comeback, as the Blue and Gold scored a 4-3 victory in eight innings. In her very next at-bat, Gomez went yard for the second time in four swings, blasting a two-run shot over the field in left to kickstart Canisius' 7-1 win in the nightcap. The wins improved Canisius to 17-13-1 overall and 6-2 in league action, while the Stags slipped to 11-20 overall and 6-6 in MAAC action with the pair of losses.

Game One Recap
The Griffs trailed Fairfield 3-0 heading into the home-half of the seventh, and were down to their final out before scoring three runs to force extra innings. With two runners on and two outs, sophomore Saige Alfaro doubled to the gap in right center, allowing pinch-runner Emily Ilano to score for second. Moments later, junior Christie McGee-Ross lined a base-hit back up the middle, which pushed senior Sophia Recrosio and Alfaro across the plate to knot the game at 3-3.

In the eighth inning, Canisius starter Megan Giese retired Fairfield in order, setting the stage for Gomez. The Los Gatos, Calif., native deposited a 1-1 pitch from Fairfield reliever Alyssa Weinberg into the Griffs' bullpen in left field to give Canisius the victory, the team's second extra-inning win of the season.

Giese earned the win in the circle for the Griffs to improve her record to 9-6 on the season. She allowed three runs on three hits, while fanning 10 and walking just one. Canisius pounded out eight hits off Fairfield pitching in the game one victory, with Saige Alfaro, McGee-Ross and Recrosio all registering multiple hits in the contest.

Game Two Recap
Canisius rode the momentum from game one into the second game of the league doubleheader, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the home-half of the first thanks to the two-run shot by Gomez, her team-leading fifth long-ball of the season. Fairfield cut Canisius' cushion in half at 2-1 with a single run in the top of the third, but the Griffs answered with a run in both the third and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead after four frames of play.

In the third, junior Sydney Costan put the Griffs up 3-1 when she scored on an RBI-groundout by graduate student Nicole Rivait, and in fourth, Canisius made the score 4-2 thanks to a base-hit to center by Saige Alfaro that pushed pinch-runner Gabi Farris across the plate from third base.

The Griffs tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth. Gomez drove in her third RBI of the second game with a sac-fly to right, and later in the frame, Rivait pushed a run across with a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Rylee Alfaro was credited with an RBI in that inning as well, as Costan scored on her RBI-single to left with two outs in the frame.

The seven runs were more than enough for game two starter, Alexis Churchill, who improved to 4-1 in the circle with the complete-game victory. Churchill was extremely efficient in the win, as she allowed just one run, an unearned run, on four hits while fanning three on 86 total pitches.

The Griffs banged out nine hits in the game two win, with Saige Alfaro going 2-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk. Gomez and Rivait combined to drive in five of Canisius' seven runs in the victory.
