Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Earns Split Against College of Charleston

Pitchers Megan Giese and Alexis Churchill combined to allow just one run in Canisius' 2-1 victory of the College of Charleston before the Cougars defeated the Golden Griffins, 6-4, in six innings in the second game of the doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in collegiate softball action in Charleston, S.C.

With the split, Canisius sits at 5-2 on the season while the College of Charleston holds a 2-6 record.

Game 1 Recap
Giese helped herself early in the contest, driving in junior Christie McGee-Ross on an RBI groundout in the first inning.

The two teams traded runs in the fourth with the Griffs adding their insurance marker on a double steal. Sophomore Sydney Costan took off for second with Cougar backstop Malaka Belser throwing the ball to first. Senior Tiara Johnson took off, successfully stealing home before the errant throw enabled Costan to take third.

College of Charleston scored its lone run of the contest when Brooke Tranum led off the home half of the frame with a solo home run.

Giese earned her third win of the season, tossing 4.1 innings, fanning five batters.

Churchill notched her second save, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

Game 2 Recap
The Griffs jumped out to an early lead in the opening frame after the first three batters reached base.
Sophomore Saige Alfaro earned the leadoff free-pass before McGee-Ross blasted an RBI triple over the right fielder's head.

McGee-Ross plated Canisius' second run on Johnson's single to center.

With two outs in the inning and a pair of runners on, freshman Morgan Cook earned her first collegiate hit, a bloop into left that was out of reach of the crashing fielders, allowing Johnson to put the Griffs ahead, 3-0.

The College of Charleston would finally respond in the home half of the third, using a four-run inning to take its first lead of the game.

Belser stepped to the plate with a pair of runners on and singled up the middle to drive in Kelli Anne Carter before a Canisius fielding error allowed Aniz Roman to score all the way from first.

Following Mia Dittoe's walk, Mary-Kathryn Scott put the Cougars up a run with a two-run single to left.

Alfaro knotted the contest at four-all after doubling home freshman Gabi Farris on a deep double over the center fielder's head.

That would be the last run the Griffs would muster in the game as the College of Charleston scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, to pull away with the victory.
