Quick Start Sparks Softball Past Marist in MAAC Championship Opener

Top-seeded Canisius plated four runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead as it defeated fifth-seeded Marist, 5-2, in winner's bracket action in the 2022 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Softball Championship Thursday at the Demske Sports Complex in downtown Buffalo.

Junior Sophia Recrosio went 1-for-2 with two RBI to highlight a balanced Golden Griffins (30-16) lineup that saw four other hitters record base knocks in the contest.

MAAC Pitcher of the Year Megan Giese picked up her 12th win of the season for Canisius, who advanced in the winner's bracket, where they will face No. 6 seed Iona Friday at 11 a.m. In seven innings of work, Giese allowed just two runs on 10 hits. She did not issue a walk and struck out five.

Meghan Davis was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI for Marist, who will face the winner of Thursday's elimination game between No. 2 seed Fairfield and No. 3 seed Siena Friday at 1:30 p.m. Hailee Jantorno was 2-for-3 while four others recorded one base hit each.

Calista Phippen was saddled with the loss for Marist. In six innings in the circle, Phippen allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks. She struck out one.

Game Recap
Canisius jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Falquez brought home the first run of the frame on a run-scoring single up the middle that plated sophomore Christie McGee-Ross

Dennis doubled the Griffs' advantage to 2-0 with an RBI single of her own later in the frame before Recrosio capped the first-inning outburst with a two-run double to left center.

Marist got on the board with two outs in the top of the second, as Davis singled home Alyssa Grupp, who recorded a triple to right field one batter earlier.

Davis struck again for the Red Foxes in the bottom of the fourth, recording a two-out double to right field that scored Ronni Howard to make it a two-run game.

Canisius restored its three-run advantage in the bottom half of the frame as an error allowed Tiara Johnson to score from third to make it a 5-2 contest.

Marist attempted to extend the game in the top half of the seventh, as singles by Jantorno and Caroline Baratta brought the tying run to the plate. Giese was able to work out of the jam, inducing a pop out to freshman second baseman Saige Alfaro to give the Griffs the win.
