Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Extends Win Streak to Seven

Canisius used an eight-run third inning to mercy Saint Peter's, 10-1, in the first game before recording a 6-3 victory in the second game of the twinbill to secure the sweep and give the Golden Griffins seven straight victories in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference softball action Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Griffs improved to 27-16 on the season and 14-4 in MAAC play while the Peacocks slipped to 18-29 and 4-10 in conference action.

The 27 victories are the most in a single season during head coach
Kim Griffin's tenure at Canisius, and the most wins in a season since 2010 (34 wins).

Game 1 Recap

Canisius slugged its way to victory in the five inning mercy-rule contest.

The Griffs played small ball to get on the board in the first, using a pair of sacrifice bunts to plate graduate outfielder
Erin Hufford.

After Saint Peter's scored its lone run of the game following a double steal in the top of the second, freshman
Emily Ilano gave the Griffs a 2-1 advantage with a sacrifice fly that scored junior Tiara Johnson in the home half of the frame.

Canisius broke the game open in the third, sending 13 batters to the dish in the eight-run inning.

Sophomore outfielder
Christie McGee-Ross singled in Hufford before scoring on sophomore Destiny Falquez's triple.

Following a pair of walks to load the bases, freshman
Rosie Gomez served a ball up the middle to plate a pair and give Canisius a 6-1 lead.

The Griffs continued to swing the bats, with freshmen
Ilano and Saige Alfaro connecting on an RBI double and single, respectively, stretching the advantage to 8-1.

Canisius capped off the big inning when Falquez collected her second hit of the frame, a two-run single to left.

Sophomore
Megan Giese tossed all five innings in the contest, earning her 10th victory of the season. Giese fanned three batters while yielding just five base hits.

Game 2 Recap

Saint Peter's came out in the second game swinging, as the Peacocks grabbed a 3-1 lead in the first two innings of play.

Dakota Pitts served a two-out single to left in the first for the game's opening run, before Audrey Ketcham's sacrifice bunt brought home Maiah Skakal in the second.

In the next at bat of the frame, Olyvia Smith collected an RBI groundout, giving the visiting Peacocks a two-run advantage.

Canisius' bats came alive in the third, when the team put a four-spot on the board to take a 5-3 lead.

Falquez continued her strong day at the plate, driving in Alfaro and Hufford to tie the contest at three.

McGee-Ross plated her second run of the day on a wild pitch to give the Griffs the lead.

After graduate student
Lindsi Dennis reached base on a throwing error, Gomez slugged another ball up the middle to score pinch runner Julissa Garcia, Canisius' fifth hit of the inning.

The Griffs added an insurance marker in the home half of the fifth when Dennis' RBI groundout brought in Falquez for a three-run advantage.

In the circle, graduate student
Shealyn Ollison took over for starter Emily Nicosia in the third and shut down any potential threats from Saint Peter's, tossing four scoreless frames.

Ollison worked out of a potential jam in the fifth after allowing a one-out triple to Pitts.

The graduate hurler proceeded to strikeout the next batter and get Katie Sciglimpaglia to foul out to Dennis at first to strand the runner at third.

Senior
Alexis Churchill entered the circle in the seventh, throwing a perfect inning on just six pitches to earn her second save of the weekend and fourth of the campaign.
