Fourth-Quarter Surge Sparks St. Bonaventure Past Men’s Lacrosse

St. Bonaventure out-scored Canisius, 5-2, in the fourth quarter to rally from a two-goal deficit and post a 13-12 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Marra Athletics Complex in Olean, N.Y.

Sean Westley scored a game-high five goals and added an assist to pace the Bonnies (10-3, 5-1 MAAC), who earned a share of the MAAC regular-season title with Saturday's victory. Jackson Rose finished with five points on three goals and two assists while three players – Anthony Cimino, Conor Murphy and Cian Collins – chipped in two points each.

Senior Jacob Buck scored four goals and added two assists to pace the Golden Griffins (2-12, 1-5 MAAC). Sophomores Hunter Parucki and Andrew Schermerhorn chipped in two goals each while freshman Johnny Richiusa went 19-of-29 at the faceoff X; scooping up a game-high 14 ground balls in the process.

Trailing 10-8 at the start of the fourth quarter, SBU rattled off three straight goals in the opening 2:29 of the frame to grab an 11-10 edge.

Parucki tied the game less than three minutes later with his second goal of the game, but the Bonnies responded with tallies from Rose and Westley just 63 second apart to retake the lead, 13-11, with just over six minutes remaining.

Schermerhorn brought the Griffs within one with less than two minutes remaining on a feed from junior Ethan Coughlin, but Canisius was unable to gain possession in the SBU half of the field before the end of regulation, allowing the Bonnies to hold on for the one-goal win.

Earlier in the contest, the teams traded goals in the opening two minutes of play before SBU used a pair of tallies in the final three minutes of the opening frame to hold a 3-1 lead after the first.

Buck opened the second-quarter scoring with his first of the contest to make it a 3-2 game, only to see the Bonnies close out the first half with three unanswered goals, punctuated two goals in a 26-second span, to take a 6-2 lead into the break.

Canisius controlled play during the third quarter, as back-to-back tallies from Ricketts and Kozack started the second-half scoring and ignited a 7-1 run that gave the Griffs a 9-7 lead late in the frame. The teams traded goals over the final 2:27 of the stanza, giving Canisius a 10-8 lead at the start of the fourth and setting the stage for the Bonnies fourth-quarter surge.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"That was arguably our most complete effort of the year. Unfortunately, we made a couple of costly mistakes in the fourth quarter that allowed them to retake the lead. Then, at the end, we had a chance to clear the ball and we didn't. We had a call go against us and we still could have had a chance to make some plays, but instead we lost our cool and put ourselves in a situation that's pretty hard to get the ball back when you're down three men.

"We had really good spacing in the third quarter and we were playing fast and got back to playing with the tempo that we started the year with. That really gave us some great looks in the six-on-six game, but then we got two huge goals out of transition: one from Isaiah (Ricketts) and then the other one when we caused the turnover and we were able to head-man the ball to (Andrew) Schermerhorn. Those were huge plays to help swing some momentum in our corner and we ran with it for the rest in the third.

"When you come to the end of the year, it's a bittersweet moment because you're going to say goodbye to some young men that you've had in the program for four years. We'll take some time to reflect on their growth as young men, not just as lacrosse players, but also as student-athletes and the young men that they're going to be as they get ready to enter the professional world. I appreciate all their time and effort. I look forward to being able to follow them as they enter adulthood to see what great things they can do next. Hopefully, some of the lessons from their time here will continue to serve them well in the future.
