Men’s Lacrosse Falls in Back-and-Forth Contest at Manhattan

Jake Nicolosi scored twice in the final six minutes of the fourth quarter to propel Manhattan to a 14-11 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y.

Nicolosi and Sean Mackinney both finished with five points on four goals and an assist to pace the Jaspers (4-5, 2-1 MAAC). Kyle Gucwa chipped in two goals and an assist while Liam Walshe scored twice. Brandon Krebs finished with seven saves between the pipes for Manhattan.

Sophomore Hunter Parucki notched a goal and added two assists for the Golden Griffins (2-8, 1-1 MAAC). Senior Jacob Buck scored two goals while three players – junior Ethan Coughlin, sophomore Andrew Schermerhorn and freshman Jaxon Fridge – all finished with a goal and an assist each.

Freshman Johnny Richiusa was 19-of-29 at the faceoff X and recorded a season-high 14 ground balls. He also recorded his first career goal, opening the scoring just eight seconds into the contest, igniting a three-goal spurt for the Griffs that gave them a 3-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest.

Manhattan responded to Canisius' opening run, stringing together four unanswered goals to take the lead before Fridge closed out the first-quarter scoring with his second of the season to make it a 4-4 game after one.

The teams traded goals in the second quarter as Manhattan opened the frame with consecutive tallies, only to see Coughlin and freshman Patrick Mitchell answer for the Griffs to send the teams into the locker room tied at 6-all.

Mackinney and Nicolosi scored the first two goals of the third quarter to put the Jaspers in front, 8-6, starting a stretch that saw the teams trade goals for a majority of the second half before Nicolosi notched a pair of goals exactly two minutes apart in the later stages of the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for Canisius.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"Today we had a great opportunity in front of us. We knew it was going to be a back-and-forth affair throughout and we just couldn't close the gap at the end when we got within one late in the game. We then gave up one and then another and unfortunately, while we had some chances, we couldn't put the ball in the net at the time that we needed to. Because of that, we came up short today.

"We did a great job of going back and forth with them and making plays when we needed to in order to keep the game close. Unfortunately, we had too many turnovers. If you have 17 turnovers, you don't deserve to win conference games or any game for that matter. We have to take care of the ball and unfortunately, we self-imploded too many times and some of those 17 turnovers ended up going directly into the back of our net. So, we have to be better at those plays over the course of the game.

"We had a couple guys, Kyle Brunsch and Andrew Schermerhorn, that each had a goal and made some plays at times as they were kind of tag teaming in replacement of Colin Kelly, who was out today. It was yet another very good day at the face off X for Johnny (Richiusa), who did really well and had a great goal to get us off and started. The big thing is we are the sum of our parts and we need guys to be able to step up and make plays, whether it's two or three guys helping to fill the void for one guy or two guys, whatever it is. That's what we need. It was encouraging to see some plays being made by guys who were thrust into bigger roles today, but we need more. We need more from all of us and it starts with me. I've got to do a better job to prepare these guys and get them ready. That's what we're going to do next week as we prepare for Quinnipiac.
