Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Late Run Dooms Men’s Lacrosse Versus Cleveland State

Cleveland State scored three unanswered goals late in the fourth quarter to break a 9-all tie and defeat Canisius, 12-10, in collegiate men's lacrosse action Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Ryan Haigh tallied five goals while Gannon Matthews finished with four points on a hat trick and an assist to pace the Vikings (1-3). Cameron Logan made 15 saves between the pipes for CSU, nine of which came in the second half.

Four players – senior Jacob Buck, sophomores Keegan Kozack and Hunter Parucki – tallied two goals each to pace the Golden Griffins (1-5) attack. Freshman Johnny Richiusa went 13-of-24 at the face-off X and added a game-high eight ground balls while graduate goalie Matt Vavonese finished with 14 saves.

With the score tied at 9-all midway through the fourth quarter, Derek Radke netted his first of the season to give the Vikings a 10-9 lead with 7:05 remaining.

Matthews struck for his second of the contest a little more than a minute later to increase the CSU advantage to two before completing his hat trick with a long-distance strike with the Griffs cage unguarded with 1:04 remaining to make it a 12-9 contest. Buck scored at the horn to determine the final margin.

Canisius jumped out to an early 4-0 lead thanks to goals from Kelly, Kozack and a pair of tallies from Parucki in the opening 7:50 of the contest.

The Griffs carried a 4-0 lead into the second quarter, only to see CSU open the frame with four unanswered goals to tie the game. Kozack halted the Viking run as he closed out the first-half scoring with 1:53 remaining to give the Griffs a 5-4 edge heading into the locker room.

Kelly restored Canisius' two-goal cushion with his second of the game to open the third-quarter scoring. The teams traded goals before Michael Care tallied his second goal of the season to ignite a four-goal spurt that gave the Vikings their first lead of the game, 9-7, early in the fourth.

Canisius responded, as junior Nathan Conry and Buck struck for back-to-back goals little more than two minutes apart to tie the game at 9-9, setting the stage for CSU's decisive spurt.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"Credit to Cleveland State for a great effort today. They deserved to win. We made way too many mistakes and allowed them to capitalize on them. We had more than enough chances offensively when you look at the shots. We just didn't make enough plays in the fourth quarter when it counted.

"Our overall engagement mentally in the fourth quarter was not good enough. We let the goal that we gave up at the end of the third carry over into the fourth and affect our psyche. We've got to be mentally more resilient when it comes to those situations. We're not going to always have calls or plays that go in our favor and we've got to be ready to go out and make the next play. That's something that we just didn't do a good enough job in the fourth quarter.

"We want to spread the wealth offensively. We're at our best when we've got multiple guys chipping in all over the stat sheet with assists, goals and shots that are getting taken because that means that the ball is moving. In the second quarter in particular, we didn't move the ball as well as we could have and even later in the game, we were pressing a little bit too much and trying to be the guy to make a big play for us, which we've got to understand and trust our offensive system that looks are going to come and it doesn't matter who scores the goal. It's all about the team success in the long run."
