Softball Powers Way to Season-Opening Win

Canisius plated 13 runs over the final two innings to defeat South Carolina State, 16-1, in the first game of the USC Upstate Classic Friday in Spartanburg, S.C.

Nine different Golden Griffin batters recorded a hit in the contest with graduate student Erin Hufford leading the way with three hits, highlighted by a pair of doubles and three runs scored. Sophomores Destiny Falquez and Gianna Fazzolari both socked home runs in the victory, along with freshman Rosie Gomez

The Griffs scored a run in each of the first three innings before the offense erupted in the final two frames to put the game away.

Falquez led off the fifth with a solo home run to put Canisius out in front 4-0 before Gomez blasted her first career long ball, ripping a three-run shot to give the Griffs a 7-0 advantage.

Adding to the lead in the sixth, Canisius scored nine runs off six hits, including four doubles, to put the game out of reach.

On the mound, sophomore
Megan Giese allowed just one run on three hits while striking out five batters, all while throwing just 54 pitches. At the plate, Giese walked twice in four plate appearances.
