Women’s Soccer Advances on Penalty Kicks in MAAC Opening Round

No. 5 seed Canisius advanced on penalty kicks, 4-2, over No. 4 seed Rider after the two sides played to a 1-1 draw in opening-round action in the 2022 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Sunday at Ben Cohen Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.

With the victory in the penalty-kick shootout, the Golden Griffins (5-4-10) moved on to the semifinals, where they will face regular-season champion and top seed Quinnipiac. The Broncs (8-7-3), meanwhile, had their season come to a close with the shootout setback.

With the score tied at 1-all after regulation and two 10-minute overtime sessions, the two teams went to a five-player shootout to determine who would advance to face the Bobcats.

Both teams were unsuccessful on their first attempt before senior Jen Romero gave the Griffs a 1-0 lead by placing her kick into the left side of the net. Junior keeper Jessica Jones provided some breathing room for Canisius in the bottom half of the second round, turning aside Anna Barkey's try with a diving save towards the left post

The teams traded goals over the next two rounds before junior Tiani Fonoti placed her attempt just inside the right post, giving the Griffs the shootout win and advancing them to the semifinal round for the first time since the 2013 season.

Maslow gave Rider a 1-0 lead less than 12 minutes into the contest as a cross played into the box by teammate Mackenzie Rodrigues was knocked around until Maslow was able to get a foot on it and put it into the Canisius goal for her sixth tally of the campaign.

Canisius' best chance to get on the board in the first half came in the 42nd minute when freshman Meghan Heath took a shot towards the top right-hand corner of the net that Rider keeper Ellie Sciancalepore was able to get a piece of, deflecting the ball over the crossbar and out of play.

Rodrigues nearly doubled the Broncs advantage in the 60th minute, creating a turnover deep in the Griffs half of the field before ringing a shot off the crossbar from just outside the top of the box.

Sophomore Madeline Weltin nearly got Canisius on the board moments after Rodrigues' crossbar shot as she was able to get a good look from close range that Sciancalepore was once again able to turn aside to keep the Broncs in the lead.

Rodrigues had another quality chance in the 66th minute, getting behind the Griffs defense before taking a shot that found the left post and stayed out.

Romero finally got the Griffs on the board with a little more than five minutes remaining in the second half as freshman Skylar Cornell played a ball to Romero the middle of the box, where she deposited it into the left side of the Rider goal for her third of the season to knot the game at 1-all.

The game moved to overtime, where Canisius continued to pressure, forcing Sciancalepore to make four of her 12 saves during the two extra sessions, setting the stage for the penalty-kick shootout
