Men's Soccer Draws With Utah Valley in Season Opener

Luke Szablewski scored his first collegiate goal, while Spencer Catalano made a career-high eight saves in Canisius' 1-1 draw with Utah Valley at the Demske Sports Complex on Thursday evening.

Szablewski potted his first collegiate tally in the game's 10th minute when he capitalized on a Utah Valley miscue. On a free kick, the Wolverines put the ball back into play and Szablewski intercepted the pass, zipping a 20-yard shot into the lower right corner of the goal.

Catalano made four saves in the first half, two of which came in the first two minutes of the contest. The highlight of the half for Catalano was a great stop on a Mark Brown shot in the 17th minute. The junior goalkeeper deflected Brown's left-footed strike on a cross nearly inside the 8-foot box.

Utah Valley's Diego Castillo scored to level the game in the 35th minute on a set piece. Castillo's shot from 25 yards out ricocheted off Catalano's hands as he was diving to his left to stop the free kick shot.

Canisius had six shot attempts in the second half, one of which was a header by Szablewski that hit the right post in the 61st minute.

Inder Thind, Jonny Tekie and Ryan Dagelman had the three shots on goal for the Griffs in the second half.

Catalano made one save in the second half.

In the final seconds of the second half, Utah Valley was given a red card and had to play the remainder of the game with 10 men.

Despite Canisius having the man advantage, the Wolverines out-shot the Griffs in the pair of overtime periods, 7-4, and also had the shots on goal advantage, 3-1.

Szablewski had the team's lone shot on goal in overtime, as Utah Valley's Carter Johnson slid in front of the net, staving a potential game-winning tally.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"Overall, I was pleased with the team's performance tonight. I thought we looked organized defensively and I felt that our work rate was very good. In the end, we were unlucky not to win the game in the late stages of the second half and overtime."

GAME NOTES
• Thursday marked the second meeting between Utah Valley and Canisius. Both of the contests in the series history have needed double overtime. Canisius is now 0-1-1 against the Wolverines.
• The draw was the first for Canisius since also ending a 1-1 tie against Marist on Oct. 17, 2018 — a span of 29 games.
• The Griffs opened their season at home for a third consecutive season, which is the longest such streak since hosting four straight season openers between 1990 and 1993.
• With hosting Utah Valley, it was the first time Canisius has hosted a program from at least two time zones away. Thursday's match was also just the second time hosting an opponent outside the Eastern time zone (Sept. 4, 1999, vs. Valparaiso).
• Catalano's eight saves is a career-high, besting his six-save performance in his last outing — his collegiate debut — against Niagara on March 25.
