Softball Sweeps Rider on Senior Day

The Canisius softball team closed out its four-game MAAC series against Rider with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday, as the Golden Griffins posted an 11-0 win in five innings before taking care of the Broncs by the score of 6-1 in the nightcap.

The two wins on Canisius' Senior Day allowed Griffs to take three-of-four from Rider on the weekend, and improved the Blue and Gold to 21-10 on the year. Rider fell to 14-18 with the pair of losses.

Game One
Canisius junior pitcher Alexis Churchill earned her team-leading seventh win of the season in the circle after she threw a four-hit shutout, and the host Griffs exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth to post an 11-0 victory in five innings over Rider Sunday to start the MAAC doubleheader.

Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when senior Erin Hufford reached first base on an infield-single. On that play, Rider threw the ball away, and Hufford used her speed to race all the way around the bases to put the Griffs on the board first. In the fourth inning, Canisius sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs on nine hits while taking advantage of two Rider errors to end the game early.

Canisius got the scoring started in the fourth after senior Lindsi Dennis drove in a run with an RBI-double to make it 2-0. Freshman Destiny Falquez made the score 5-0 in favor of the home team with a bases-clearing double that pushed three runs across to make the score 5-0. Later in the frame, fellow freshman Gianna Fazzolari ripped a two-run homer over the fence in right-center to make the score 10-0. Dennis later closed out the scoring parade for the Blue and Gold when she raced home after a wild pitch by Rider relieve pitcher Jackie Cal, one of three Rider pitchers that saw action in that frame.

The run support was more than enough for Churchill, who recorded her fourth-straight shutout victory in the circle. She went the distance and posted one strikeout in her five innings of work.

Canisius had 10 hits in the game one victory, with Hufford and Dennis each recording multi-hit performances. In the fourth inning, senior Kara Paradowski stole a base, her 30th stolen base of the season. That stolen base allowed her to become just the second Canisius player and the fifth player in MAAC history to record 100-career stolen bases.

Game Two
Canisius trailed Rider 1-0 heading into the home-half of the third before Canisius scored three times to take a 3-1 lead. Dennis drove in a pair of runs in the third with a single to right that pushed seniors Morgan Altman and Paradowski across the plate, and moments later, Falquez recorded a sac-fly that allowed Fazzolari to score from third.

In the fourth, Canisius tacked on two more runs an on RBI-groundout by Fazzolari, which allowed Hufford to score. Again, Canisius took advantage of another Rider throwing error on that play, as the ball got away from the Broncs' infield, letting Paradowski race home to put the Blue and Gold up 5-1. In the sixth, Canisius added an insurance run on an RBI-single off the bat of freshman Sydney Costan.

Canisius starter Emily Nicosia picked up her sixth win on the year after she allowed one run on five hits to go with two strikeouts. Freshman Megan Giese came on in relief of Nicosia and pitched a scoreless seventh frame to seal the win for the Blue and Gold.

Hufford and Costan each had a pair of hits in the win, while Paradowski went 1-for-2 with a walk, three runs scored and four stolen bases.

Head Coach Kim Griffin's Postgame Comments
"We have such a strong lineup that it is never going to be the stress of one player to always have to come out on top. If someone can't get it done, there is always the confidence that the next person can pull through for the team. I thought we rebounded really well after a tough loss in game two Saturday, and it is always great to be able to celebrate Senior Day with a pair of wins."
