Softball Falls to Marist in MAAC Championship

Game Recap
Marist pitcher Calista Phippen tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout and she struck out 11 Canisius batters, while junior catcher Kaley Coltrain went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, as the No. 8 seed Red Foxes defeated the second-seeded Golden Griffins 5-0 in the first game of the 2021 MAAC Softball Championship double-elimination bracket Thursday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

With the win, Marist advances to the tournament's winner's bracket final, where the Red Foxes will meet sixth-seeded Manhattan. That game will be played Friday at 2 p.m., on the Demske Sports Complex turf. Canisius will play No. 4 seed Fairfield in the event's first elimination game on Friday, with game time set for 11 a.m.

Marist senior Caroline Baratta got the Red Foxes on the scoreboard first in the top-half of the third inning with a solo homer, her fourth of the season, off Canisius starter Alexis Churchill. In the fourth inning, Marist stretched its lead to 2-0 on an RBI-single off the bat of senior Hunter Hand. That would be the end of the day for Churchill, who was relieved by Canisius freshman Megan Giese. Moments later, the Red Foxes made it 3-0 when freshman designated player Alyssa Grupp raced home from third on a wild pitch.

Marist added single runs in the top-half of the sixth and the seventh to take the 5-0 lead, with Coltrain's solo bomb to right capping the game's scoring. That run support was more than enough for Phippen, who allowed just four Canisius base runners to reach second base en route to her ninth win in the circle this season.

Churchill took the loss for the Griffs, as her record moved to 7-4 on the year. Senior Kara Paradowski, graduate student Morgan Altman, freshman Gianna Fazzolari and junior Hannah Catallo-Stooks all had hits in the losing effort for the Blue and Gold, with Altman recording the Griffs' lone extra-base hit - a double in the home-half of the fourth.

Head Coach Kim Griffin's Postgame Comments
"Give Calista Phippen credit, she kept us off-balance and we struggled to make adjustments at the plate. We weren't able to string any hits together. I just felt like we couldn't get our offense going."

Game Notes
• Thursday marked the seventh time Canisius and Marist have met in the postseason. The Griffs are 5-2 now all-time against the Red Foxes in the MAAC Softball Championship.
• The 11 strikeouts for Canisius' batters are the most for the team since Iona's Kara Zazzaro fanned 12 Griffs back on April 10.
• Altman's double in the fourth was her 11th of the season and the 27th of her career, which ties her for 19th in program history.
• Canisius had three stolen bases in the losing effort, including one by Paradowski in the sixth inning. That stolen base for the Lancaster, N.Y., native was her 40th of the season, which ties her with former Canisius player Lauren Hope for the most stolen bases in a single-season in program history.
