Softball Splits Final Two at Siena

The Canisius softball team split the final two games of a four-game MAAC series at Siena Wednesday afternoo. Canisius was able to shutout the Saints, 3-0, to earn the victory in game one, but fell victim to a four-run, sixth inning rally by Siena in game two, resulting in a 5-3 loss.

With the split, Canisius is now 8-9 on the season, while Siena moved to 12-8.

GAME ONE
Canisius scored twice in the third inning, added an insurance run in the seventh, and got a complete-game shutout from senior pitcher Emily Nicosia to score the 3-0 victory in the first game of the day. That win by the Griffs snapped Siena's seven-game win streak.

After two scoreless innings, the Griffs struck first in the top of the third after senior Sue Vi got the frame started by drawing a walk. Moments later, Vi scored on an RBI-triple from senior Erin Hufford and then Hufford would come home on an RBI-single to left off the bat of fellow senior Kara Paradowski. Canisius capped the scoring in the seventh as freshman Gianna Fazzolari drove in her team-leading 16th RBI of the season on a fielder's choice that allowed Paradowski to score.

Nicosia improved to 3-3 on the season after she went the distance and allowed just four hits to go with a walk and a strikeout. In the fifth, Siena threatened in the home-half of the fifth and the seventh with two runners on, but Nicosia was able to work out of trouble to record her second shutout effort in 2021.

Paradowski and Hufford each had two hits for Canisius in the first game, while seniors Morgan Altman and Lindsi Dennis, as well as Fazzolari and freshman Sydney Costan each added hits as well.

GAME TWO
Game two started in a similar fashion to game one with no runs through the first two innings. In the top of the third, Canisius once again scored first as Vi was able to race home from third base after Altman took off and stole second.

Siena's Emma McLaughlin tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI-double down the left field line. That hit was Siena's first of the day, as Canisius starter Alexis Churchill had retired six-straight Saints batters through the start of the fourth. The game remained tied until the fifth when Canisius freshman Destiny Falquez doubled to right center, driving in Dennis, to make it 2-1 in favor of the Griffs.

The Saints answered Canisius with hot bats in the home-half of the sixth. Siena sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth and took advantage of a Canisius error in the frame to score four times to make the score 5-2 in favor of the home team.

Canisius cut Siena's lead to 5-3 in the seventh with a two-out run. Fazzolari kept the game alive for Canisius with a double, and then she was replaced by pinch-runner Samantha Crane. Crane scored moments later as Dennis doubled to right, however, the Saints brought in reliever Nicole Pattile, who got the game's final out to earn her third save of the year.

Churchill took the loss after she allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits in 5.2 innings of work. The Griffs had 11 hits in the losing effort, as Dennis went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Hufford, Paradowski and Falquez each had two hits in the second game, while Paradowski stole two more bases to give her a team-leading 18 steals on the year.

Game Notes
• Canisius is now 42-18 all-time against Siena.
• With her four stolen bases (two in each game), Paradowski now has 18 steals on the year - which leads the MAAC and is 10 more than the next closest player in the conference.
• Hufford extended her hitting streak to seven straight, which is the longest active hitting streak on the team.
• Fazzolari leads all MAAC freshman with her 16 RBI through the team's first 17 games.
