Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Canisius Picks Up First MAAC Win with Two-Goal Triumph at Siena

Junior attackman Jacob Buck tallied a game-high six points to pace Canisius in a 12-10 victory over Siena in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y.

Buck recorded a hat trick and added three assists for the visiting Golden Griffins (2-1, 1-1 MAAC). Freshmen Andrew Schermerhorn and Keegan Kozack pitched in four points apiece on two goals and two assists while fellow newcomer Hunter Parucki notched three points on a goal and two helpers.

Sophomore Connor Beals had another solid day at the faceoff X for the Blue & Gold, winning 17-of-26 draws and adding seven ground balls. Sophomore goalkeeper Otto Bergmann recorded 12 saves between the pipes.

Jack Kiernan notched four goals for the host Saints (0-3, 0-2 MAAC). Brendan Lantieri tallied a goal and added two assists while George Rusnak chipped in a pair of tallies. Chris Yanchoris made 13 saves in goal for Siena.

Canisius never trailed in the contest, opening the scoring with a man-up goal from junior Jake Lemon before Buck notched his first of the afternoon to give the Griffs a 2-0 advantage near the midway point of the first quarter.

Kiernan got the Saints on the board with a little more than five minutes remaining in the opening frame to cut the Siena deficit in half, but Parucki and sophomore Jackson Naylor countered for Canisius to make it a 4-1 contest at the end of the first.

Graduate transfer Dan Kritkausky started the second-quarter scoring with a man-up marker to increase the Griffs cushion to four, only to see the Saints record the final three goals of the half to make it a one-goal game, 5-4, at the break.

Canisius held a 6-4 advantage early in the third quarter thanks for senior Ryan Cicci's first of the campaign, but the Saints answered with a pair of tallies to tie the game at 6-6 with 9:27 remaining in the third.

Buck restored the Griffs' advantage less than a minute after Siena's equalizer and Kozack struck for his first of the afternoon a little more than two minutes later to push the Canisius margin back to two.

The teams proceeded to trade goals over the 15 minutes of play before Kozack and Schermerhorn struck just 69 seconds apart to stretch the Canisius advantage back to three, 12-9. Siena was able to get one goal back with an unassisted effort from Seth Van Schepen, but that would be as close as they would get as the Griffs closed out the game to earn the two-goal victory.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"it was a complete turnaround from a competitive mental state from last week. The guys came out ready to play 60 minutes of lacrosse. I'm very proud of the rebound effort from what was a pretty abysmal effort last week. We're very excited to get back in the win column with a huge team effort today.

"Every week is a learning experience for this team. There are a lot of younger players stepping up and seeing a substantial number of minutes. We're really leaning on our older guys who have been around to the set the tone and lead the way during the week so that when we get to these situations in a game, we're able to handle it. I firmly believe these one, two and three-goal games are going to serve us well throughout the season. If you look at the scores across the conference, it is a it is a neck-and-neck race every single week.

"They (Andrew Schermerhorn, Hunter Parucki and Keegan Kozack) are lacrosse junkies. They want to get better and are eating up the film, asking the right questions in our prep during the week. It's exciting to see them having some success here today. The boys as a group were fired up for Andrew getting his first career start and being able to get a couple of assists and a couple of big goals for us, so the excitement was there and when you can get some of those contributions, it's going to help pay dividends in the long run.

"Connor (Beals) has done a great job coming in and adapting on the fly to new surroundings: academically, socially, athletically. It's a credit for him, but he's somebody who really takes his faceoff craft very seriously. He comes in and meets with coaches, as does Trevor (Folsom) and Dylan (McNally) about upcoming opponents and what they're doing in practice and them as a unit, are able to help provide leadership and guidance right now. Connor has carried the load so far, but we know that those two guys are ready when their time is called upon because we're going to need them in the long run as well."
