Saints’ Second Half Spark Lifts Siena Past Griffs

Three second-half goals for Siena in a 15-minute span aided the Saints to a 3-2 victory over Canisius Thursday from a water-logged Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y.

Canisius netted the game's first goal in the 31st minute after a pass from sophomore Alessandro Fabiano atop the 18-yard-box allowed senior Lachlan Beever to score a low-right-side strike. Beever's tally was his first since scoring at Utah Valley on Sept. 13, 2019. Fabiano's assist was the first of his collegiate career.

Siena would net the game's next two goals over a six-plus-minute span to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman Jack Mendrysa tied the game up after receiving a pass from classmate Cam Shaw, placing the ball in the top-left corner of the goal. The Saints would take the lead off a Canisius own goal in the 67th minute.

Sophomore Julius Schoner would tie the game up quickly, striking off a set piece 48 seconds after Mendrysa's goal.

Nearly eight minutes after Schoner's tying score, the Saints' game-winning goal would come off the foot of Shaw on a far-right strike from 35 yards out.

The goals for Mendrysa and Shaw were both their first collegiate scores.

Canisius outshot Siena, 14-13, despite losing the shots on target battle, 8-5.

Senior goalkeeper Tom Crosbie earned his second consecutive start in goal for the Griffs (0-2, 0-2 MAAC), making five saves, which matches his career high.

Siena's Bilal Hersi led the Saints with five shot attempts, three of which were on target. Goalkeeper Greg Monroe made three saves for the Saints (1-1, 1-1 MAAC).

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"Despite the result, I felt our team actually played very well. We possessed the ball very well through the midfield and looked dangerous going forward. Mental lapses have hurt us in both games this year. If we can eliminate the mental errors, we are tough to play against."

Game Notes
• Thursday was the 33rd meeting between the two New York State schools. The Griffs record against the Saints now stands at 11-19-3.
• Lachlan Beever established new career-highs in shots attempted (3) and shots on goal (2) with Canisius. It was the most shot attempts and shots on target for the Australian since a match in 2018 with Medaille when he had four shot attempts with two reaching the goal against Manhattanville.
Alessandro Fabiano recorded his first collegiate assist on Beever's first-half tally.

Tom Crosbie matched his career high in saves (5) in the loss. Crosbie stopped five Bucknell shots in the 2019 season opener. He also made five saves in the last meeting against Siena on Oct. 2, 2019.
• After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, the Griffs are now 30-7-3 when leading at halftime under head coach Dermot McGrane.
