Canisius Announces Change to Cross Country/Track Head Coaching Position

Canisius Director of Athletics Bill Maher announced today that Nate Huckle will transition from his post as head coach of the cross country/track teams to serve in an advisory role for the program, effective Dec. 31.

Assistant coach Tyler Scheving will take over the cross country/track programs on an interim basis, starting on Jan. 1, 2022. Huckle, who has served as the head coach for both the men's and women's cross country/track teams since 2011, will continue with the programs and focus primarily on the Golden Grffins' distance runners during the indoor and outdoor track seasons. Huckle, who plans to pursue a degree in sports psychology next fall, will also assist other Canisius head coaches with enhancing the mental approach needed to achieve competitive success.

"I would like to thank Nate for his 10 years of dedication and service to the College, to our cross country/track programs and to our student-athletes," Maher said. "As one of our veteran head coaches, Nate has helped transform our program from solely a cross country team into a year-round cross country and track program which serves a greater number of student-athletes with year-round training opportunities. I am also thankful for his willingness to continue to work with our student-athletes and staff, while serving as a mentor for Tyler Scheving, as he will lead our program as interim head coach. I wish Nate nothing but continued success as he focuses on his family and transitions into the new role for our program."

"I am grateful for the opportunity to take a step back to focus on my family and my own professional development, while continuing to assist our program with my knowledge and experience," Huckle said. "Canisius College has helped me grow personally and professionally over the last decade, and I look forward to paying that forward to our athletic department in any way that I can."

Scheving has served as an assistant under Huckle since 2019-20, and prior to joining the coaching staff at Canisius, he spent two seasons as an assistant cross country/track and field coach at the University at Buffalo.
