Men’s Soccer Falls to Rider at Home, 4-1

Four different Rider players scored goals as the Broncs defeated Canisius, 4-1, in MAAC men's soccer action on a chilly Saturday afternoon from the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Rider improved its record to 7-5-2 on the season and 4-2-1 in MAAC play with its victory. Canisius now has a 1-11-2 overall record and a 1-6-0 mark in MAAC contests.

MATCH RECAP
In a spirited affair that featured 11 yellow cards, Rider jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute as Matt Araujo scored the game's opening goal. Francisco Gomez Olano's pass inside the penalty area was deflected by Adel Al-Masude's boot before finding Araujo's foot. His off-balance shot eluded a Canisius defender and was sent into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Rider's lead was extended in the 36th minute thanks to a cross from Sergio Aguinaga on a corner kick which deflected off a Canisius defender and into the goal.

In the game's 56th minute, Kodie Sarkodie cut into Rider's lead as his header off a Jo Preci corner kick found the back of the net. Sarkodie broke through Rider's defense to head Preci's cross toward the far corner of the goal, netting his first collegiate tally and point.

Just five minutes later, Lenny Cidolit gave Rider a two-goal lead again as Al-Masude's corner kick lofted over four Canisius defenders, landing right on Cidolit's right foot. He one-timed the shot into the top-left corner of the net, making it a 3-1 contest.

In the 78th minute, Cidolit was dealt a yellow card after fouling a Canisius player in the 18-yard box, setting up a Griffs penalty kick. Alessio Atzori took the penalty for the Griffs but Pablo Gatinois was able to stop Atzori's right-footed attempt.

Zaki Alibou added an insurance marker for the Broncs in the 82nd minute, sending his left-footed shot into the far bottom corner of the goal.

Goalkeeper William Howard made four saves for the Griffs, while Atzori established career highs in shot attempts (5) and shots on goal (3) in the contest.

Canisius recorded one more shot attempt than Rider, 19-18, while the shots on goal were 8-8.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"The score does not reflect the game in any way. The biggest difference was that Rider finished some of their chances and we did not."
