Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Monmouth’s Three-Goal Half Dooms Men’s Soccer

After Canisius scored an eighth-minute goal, Monmouth responded by netting three unanswered tallies in just over 21 minutes, aiding the Hawks (7-3-2, 5-0-0 MAAC) to a 4-2 victory over the Griffs (1-9-2, 1-4-0 MAAC) at a blustery Hesse Field on the Great Lawn in West Long Branch, N.J., on Saturday afternoon.

Monmouth's Ben Zakowski recorded a three-point day, assisting on the Hawks' first goal and scoring the team's second tally.

Canisius took the lead in the eighth minute behind a goal from Federico Mereto. Reilly Boyer took a free kick for the Griffs following a Monmouth foul near the midfield line. Boyer's kick lofted into the penalty area where Mereto could generate a touch, allowing him to blast his shot past Monmouth's goalkeeper.

Monmouth responded rather quickly, netting the tying goal just 27 seconds after the Griffs' tally. Jonas Lyshoj drew the game level after receiving a pass from Zakowski.

Zakowski gave the Hawks the lead in the 19th minute. Griffin Tomas and Luke McBeth were credited with the assists on the goal.

Bastian Hatcher extended Monmouth's lead to 3-1 with his 30th-minute goal.

Canisius netted its second goal of the game in the 48th minute as Ryan Dagelman was able to take advantage of a goalmouth scramble following a corner kick.

The Hawks' lead was extended back to a two-goal game as a pass from a Monmouth player inside the penalty area deflected off a Canisius player and into the goal.
