Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Finishes Road Swing with Setback at Air Force

Sophomore Jacob Buck tallied six points and senior Mathieu Boissonneault pitched in five, but a 9-3 spurt to open the second half sparked Air Force to a 15-11 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Sunday at Falcon Stadium on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado.

Brandon Dodd tallied four goals and added four assists to pace the Falcons (4-3) in their home debut. Trey Lervick pitched in four points on two goals and two assists while Jake Thornally and Ethan Grandolfo notched two goals apiece. Ryan Lynch was 16-of-22 at the faceoff X as Air Force won 21-of-30 draws contested.

Buck matched his career high with four assists and added two goals while Boissonneault notched a season-best four goals and added an assist for the Golden Griffins (0-5). Senior Carter Stefaniak added a pair of tallies and sophomore Jake Lemon notched two points with a goal and an assist.

Holding a slim 5-4 edge at the start of the third quarter, Air Force began the second half with goals from Quincey Peene and Thornally during the opening five minutes of the frame to expand its advantage to three.

Boissonneault countered for Canisius, netting his second of the contest at the 8:31 mark of the third, but the Falcons once again had a response, using another three-goal surge to take a 10-5 lead early in the fourth.

Back-to-back goals just 32 seconds apart from Stefaniak and Boissonneault trimmed the Griffs' deficit back to three, but Lervick's second of the afternoon ignited another run for the home team, this time a four-goal stretch over a four-minute span that gave the Falcons their largest lead of the game, 14-7, with 7:36 remaining.

The teams traded goals less than a minute later before the Griffs used tallies from Buck, Boissonneault and Lemon over the final 4:28 of regulation to determine the final four-goal margin.

Earlier in the contest, Canisius trailed 2-0 less than five minutes into the contest before using goals from Stefaniak, Penna and Boissonneault during a four-minute span midway through the opening frame to take a 3-2 lead.

Air Force responded to the Griffs' surge, tallying the final two goals of the first before opening the second-quarter scoring to build a 5-3 advantage.

Freshman Jackson Naylor was able to halt the Falcons' surge, recording his first collegiate tally with 10:12 to play in the second to make it a 5-4 contest at the break, setting the stage for the Falcons' second-half surge.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"From top to bottom, it was our best effort of the season, but a six-to-seven-minute lull in the third quarter allowed them to go on a four-goal run and that was the big difference in the game. But, from a coaches' perspective, I was happy about the body of work, especially heading into conference play.

"It was execution of the game plan. That's what we get when we do that. Against Hartford, we didn't execute the game plan and do the things that make us successful. We got back to basics today; trusting the system and trusting one another. That really was a big part us putting some more goals in the back to the net today.

"At this point, it's just a matter of us spending time together, looking at this game, and using our time as a team on the road to continue to gel and build chemistry and that'll show on the field. Having an opportunity to travel the way we did this week is going set us up for the big battles that we're going to see week in and week out come MAAC play."
