Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Hobart in 2020 Debut

Hobart recorded 16 unanswered goals to break open a close contest and cruise to a 22-8 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Poole Sports Dome in Geneva, N.Y.

Eric Holden tallied five goals and an assist to highlight a potent Statesmen attack. Derrek Madonna and Justin Scott each finished with hat tricks while Bradley Simas tallied two goals and an assist. Sam Lucchesi got the start in goal for Hobart and recorded 11 saves in 38 minutes of action.

Sophomore Jacob Buck recorded a career-high six goals to pace the Griffs. Senior Mathieu Boissonneault pitched in a goal and an assist while freshman goalie Otto Bergmann made 11 saves between the pipes for Canisius in the second half after replacing senior Cody Haas in the crease during the intermission.

In the season opener for both programs, Hobart held a 4-2 lead late in the first quarter before erupting for 16 straight goals over a nearly 25-minute span to build a commanding 20-2 cushion midway through the third quarter. Nine different Statesmen tallied goals during the game-changing run, with Holden and Madonna leading the way with three goals apiece.

Buck finally ended the Hobart surge, book-ending a three-goal stretch for Canisius that closed out the third and narrowed the gap to 20-5.

The teams traded goals during the fourth, with Buck adding a pair of tallies to his career day while freshman Nathan Conry closed out the scoring with his first collegiate tally to determine the final margin.

Earlier in the contest, Hobart jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, highlighted by a pair of tallies from Holden before Buck responded for Canisius with two goals of his own to trim the deficit to 4-2, setting the stage for the Statemen's dominating run.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's postgame Comments
"Today we faced an experienced Hobart team that went on a run that created a gap we could not close. We had some early opportunities that we didn't capitalize on in the first quarter before they went on their run.

"As a team, we didn't quit and closed out the game by playing hard and gaining valuable experience, with numerous players getting their first opportunity to experience intense college lacrosse minutes."
