Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Elon Downs Women’s Soccer 1-0 in Overtime

Game Recap
The only goal of the game proved to be the most crucial, as the Canisius women's soccer team fell to Elon 1-0 in overtime Thursday night at Rudd Field in Elon, N.C. The game was the 2019 season-opener for both programs.

Just a few minutes into the first overtime period, Elon's Bethany Harford gave the host Phoenix the victory after she took a corner-kick pass from teammate Hannah Doherty and played the ball across the box and into the upper-left corner of the goal in the game's 95th minute. The goal for Harford stands as the first of her collegiate career.

The game remained scoreless through regulation time largely due to senior goalkeeper Alana Rossi, who made 11 saves in goal for the Golden Griffins. Elon goalkeeper Katrin Hauksdottir made one save en route to earning her first victory of the season.

The Phoenix outshot the Grifs 26-2, and lead Canisius 12-1 in shots on goal.

Head Coach Todd Clark's Postgame Comments
"It's always hard to play on the road, but this team is resilient. Challenges like these and teams like these prepare us for MAAC competition. It's early-season soccer, and we have already shown grit and determination. It's the MAAC that matters and the next game that matters."

Game Notes
• Thursday's game at Elon marked the first meeting between the two programs.
• Canisius has opened the season with an overtime game in each of the last three years.
• The 11-save performance marks the third time in Rossi's career where she has recorded 10-or more stops in a contest.
