Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Top-Seeded Marist in MAAC Semifinals

Top-seed Marist used a four-goal spurt that spanned both halves to take the lead and held off a late comeback attempt from fourth-seeded Canisius to record an 11-10 victory in the second semifinal of the 2019 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship Thursday at Tenney Stadium in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Jamison Embury finished with five points on three goals and two assists while Joe Tierney tallied four goals to pace the Red Foxes (9-6), who advanced to Saturday's championship contest. Marist will face No. 2 seed Quinnipiac, who defeated No. 3 seed Detroit Mercy by a 19-10 margin in Thursday's other semifinal contest, in the title game to determine the recipient of the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Freshman Jacob Buck, the MAAC Rookie of the Year, scored three goals and senior Layne Collins notched four points on a goal and three assists for the Golden Griffins (8-8). All-MAAC First-Team selections Carter Stefaniak and Mathieu Boissonneault finished with two points each as Stefaniak scored twice while Boissonneault notched a goal and an assist.

Senior goalie Brad Nordstrom made 12 saves between the pipes for Canisius, seven of which came in the second half.

Trailing 8-6 late in the second quarter, Jamison found the back of the net with 11 seconds to play before halftime to pull the Red Foxes within one heading into the break.

Marist carried the momentum from Jamison's marker into the second half as Jojo Pirreca tied the game moments before the midway point of the third quarter before a pair of tallies from Tierney gave the Red Foxes a 10-8 lead heading into the fourth.

Stefaniak got the Griffs within one on a less than minute into the final frame, but James Lyons answered for Marist to make it an 11-9 contest.

Buck completed his hat trick on a feed from Boissonneault to once again get the Griffs within one with a little more than 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

Canisius had a couple of changes to net the equalizer in the final minutes of regulation, but Marist keeper Jake MacGregor made a pair of saves on point-blank chances from the Griffs to help the Red Foxes hold on and advance to the league title game for the second time in three seasons.

Earlier in the contest, Canisius jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Collins, Boissonneault and Buck, but Marist responded with four unanswered goals over a more than nine-minute span to take a 4-3 near the midway point of the second quarter.

The Griffs had an answer for the Red Foxes' spurt as they rattled off goals from senior Logan Monroe, Stefaniak and senior Mario Caito in a 1:42 span to build a 6-4 lead.

Jake Weinman and Embury responded to get Marist level at 6-6 later in the frame, but MAAC All-Rookie Team selections Buck and Jake Lemon scored just 67 seconds apart to put the Griffs back in front by two with just over a minute remaining in the second quarter, providing the backdrop for Jamison's goal to spark the Red Foxes go-ahead spurt.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"It was a back-and-forth game. We knew it was going to be a battle all the way to the last possession and it certainly was. Obviously, it stings to come up short and be on the losing end, but I'm proud of our men and the fact that they competed for 60 minutes. They didn't get down when we were behind. They sold out. I thank every single one of them for the effort they gave today.

"We had some opportunities late, but they just didn't drop for us tonight. We handled the late-game situations well and kept our composure. We didn't get out-of-sorts, I just wish we could have found the back of the net one more time to give ourselves a chance at some extra lacrosse.

"For Brad (Nordstrom) and Layne (Collins), coming in as fifth-year transfers and them being willing to take an extra year of their lives to commit to playing lacrosse and coming into a brand-new situation, I cannot thank them enough for helping to add some leadership and experience to the team this year. The four seniors who spent their entire careers here at Canisius – our captain Michael Sanzone, Logan Monroe, Trevor Hamm and Mario Caito – the four guys, they came in as a class together. It was the four of them. That was it. They stuck together and banded together for four years. I'm so proud of their growth as young men, as lacrosse players and as leaders. They're going to be fondly remembered in the program for helping to establish a new set of standards and the culture going forward. To each of them, I quickly told them after the game how much I loved them and appreciated all that they've done for the program. I know they're going to do great things in their lives, so a big thank you to them."
