Rowing Completes Special Day Against Robert Morris

Recap
The Canisius rowing team took part in its last home event of the spring on Sunday morning, racing Robert Morris in six matchups at the Amherst Veterans Canal Park on Tonawanda Creek in Amherst, N.Y.

Originally planned as the Black Rock Cup at the West Side Rowing Club, icy conditions in the Black Rock Canal forced the movement of the regatta. Despite the change of venue, the Golden Griffins and Colonials still competed head-to-head in the second varsity eight, varsity eight and novice four for the first session, followed by the varsity eight (again), varsity four and novice eight races taking place in the second session.

SESSION 1
The second varsity eight crew kicked off the day with a time of 7:26.42, finishing behind their Robert Morris counterparts. The first varsity eight fared better, edging out the Colonials with a 6:54.45 time. The novice four rounded out the first half of the regatta by racing to a second-place finish with a 9:50.94 mark.

SESSION 2
Following the
Hudson 4+ boat dedication to former Athletic Director Dr. Dan Starr, the Griffs rebounded by sweeping the final three races of the day. The first varsity eight started the later portion of the regatta by rowing to a 6:54.30 posting to defeat Robert Morris once again. The varsity four then outraced both Colonial crews with a 7:52.84 mark, while the novice eight pulled out a victory with a 7:45.00 time over RMU.

Head Coach Kerri Brace's Postrace Comments
"We're super grateful that we have this backup plan and we're able to move up here. We're thankful to everybody at UB for helping us make this happen. We've gotten some beautiful water and weather, and it feels good to get out here, with the ice bergs that we're facing down at our home course, that we have someplace to go and get our strokes in.

"We're super excited to name the boat after Doc Starr. I've had the pleasure of getting to know him over the past couple months after we decided to name it after him. He's done so much for Canisius College Athletics, but especially for women in Canisius Athletics, and I'm lucky to be in this role and I don't think I'm in this role without him and everything he did, so we're happy he and his family could be here today.

"We're really excited we can continue this standing duel with Robert Morris. Nelle (Stahura) has done a great job with her team, we're happy to have them come out and we're looking forward to keeping this tradition going."
