Women's Lacrosse Drops Quarterfinal Contest at Siena

Game Recap
Kerry Gerety scored six goals to lead Siena in its 16-12 defeat of Canisius in MAAC women's lacrosse quarterfinal action from Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y., Saturday afternoon.
 
Joining Gerety in the scoring column was Annie Brennan who tallied four goals and two helpers in the win. Julia Pelcher also recorded a hat trick, while teammates Nicole McNeely and Mary Soures found the back of the net a combined three times. Siena netminder Sammy Horton made five saves to earn the win. The Saints outshot the Golden Griffins 29-25, as well as forcing 17 turnovers with nine coming via cause.
 
For the Blue and Gold, graduate student Jen Reininger tallied four points on two goals and two assists, while sophomore Marissa Malvaso and Jourdan Roemer each recorded a hat trick on the afternoon. Freshman Katie Smolensky and junior Bryar Cummings each found the back of the net twice in the loss. Sophomore Lauren Gilbert got the start in the cage but was replaced by senior Ellen Newton following Siena's 12th goal of the contest. The two goalies combined for seven saves. Canisius won the battle on the draw (16-14) and ground balls (15-11).
 
Canisius held a 2-1 lead following back-to-back goals from Marissa and Reininger just five and a half minutes into the first half.
 
Siena then went on a 7-0 run to take a commanding 8-2 lead with 11:45 left in the first. Gerety scored three times, and Brennan scored twice for the Saints during the run. Romer and Reininger put a brief halt to the run, scoring a minute and a half apart. The Saints would go on to score three more goals in the half to go up 11-5 at the break.
 
In the second half, the Saints built their lead to 13-6 at the 23:46 mark following Brennan's fourth tally of the contest, followed by nearly 10-minutes of scoreless action.
 
The Golden Griffins outscored Siena 6-3 in the final 15:33, including the last three goals of the game. Smolensky, Roemer, Cummings and Marissa Malvaso all scored in the final 15-minutes of the game.

Game Notes
• Canisius is now 17-9 all-time against the Saints.
• Roemer finished her career with 259 career points on 157 goals and 102 assists. Also, for Roemer, it was her 26th career hat trick.
• Marissa Malvaso collected her second hat trick of the season and sixth of her career.
• Cummings recorded her second hat trick of the season and third of her career.
