Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Cleveland State in Non-League Finale

Cleveland State rattled off 13 unanswered goals during a 22-minute stretch in the first half to erase an early deficit and cruise to a 19-10 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Tuesday at the Krenzler Dome in Cleveland, Ohio.

Nick Wendel tallied five goals and pitched in an assist while Nick Polydoras added four goals and a helper to pace the Vikings (5-6) attack. Stephan Russo recorded eight saves in goal for CSU.

Senior Mario Caito recorded a hat trick while fellow senior Layne Collins chipped in two goals an assist for the Golden Griffins (5-5). Junior Mathieu Boissonneault and Jacob Buck added a goal and an assist each.

Canisius held an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals in the opening two minutes from junior Holden Garlent and Caito before the Vikings took control of the contest by recording the next 13 tallies, highlighted by four man-up markers during a two-minute non-releasable penalty against the Griffs, to build an 11-goal cushion with less than four minutes to play in the second quarter.

Polydoras and Wendall led the way for CSU during the game-changing spurt with hat tricks while seven different Vikings pitched in one goal apiece.

Caito finally halted the CSU run, netting his second of the contest less than two minutes into the third quarter to make it a 10-goal game. The Vikings once again had an answer to Canisius' early salvo, however, responding with three of the next four tallies to build their largest lead of the game at 16-4.

Canisius opened the fourth with four unanswered goals, beginning with sophomore Ryan Wierzbicki's first collegiate tally, to trim the deficit to eight.

The teams closed out the contest by trading goals until Adam Clark scored for CSU with 92 seconds to play to determine the final margin.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"We jumped out to a 2-0 lead, which was a great start, but we totally expected them to come charging back, which they did with those five goals to end the first quarter. It's a three-goal game at that point, which is not a big deal. We've been in those situations many times. But what really killed us was the two-minute non-releasable penalty in the second quarter where they scored four man-up goals. That gave them a seven-goal lead and we were unable to stop them until it ended up being a 13-goal run that they went on. You cannot expect to win games if you're going to give up a run like that.

"We need to regroup and get on the same page once again. We've got a great opportunity this weekend to get back into conference play and focus on the rest of the way as every game from here on out is very meaningful."
