Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Edged by Jaspers

Manhattan scored the final five goals of the game to erase a four-goal deficit and defeat Canisius, 7-6, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Friday at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y.

Jake Nicolosi scored two goals to lead the Jaspers (6-7, 2-4 MAAC), who snapped a two-game losing skid with the victory. Parker Giarratana, Brad Grinnell and Luke Hanson finished with two points apiece on a goal and an assist.

Brendan Krebs made 11 saves between the pipes for Manhattan, highlighting a Jaspers defense that held the Golden Griffins (8-6, 4-2 MAAC) without a goal over the final 34:52 of regulation.

Juniors Mathieu Boissonneault and Carter Stefaniak tallied two goals each while sophomore Ryan Cicci and senior Layne Collins added single markers for Canisius.

Senior goalie Brad Nordstrom made 13 saves for the Griffs while freshman Dylan McNally was 11-of-15 at the faceoff X.

Trailing 6-2 late in the first half after a four-goal spurt allowed Canisius to build a 6-2 cushion, Kelson Borisenko got the Jaspers back into the contest on a transition goal with 10 seconds remaining in the opening frame to make it a 6-3 game at the break.

Manhattan rode the momentum of Borisenko's tally into the third as Justin Malpica opened the second-half scoring with a man-up goal before back-to-back strikes from Nicolosi later in the stanza leveled the score at 6-6.

Giarratana gave Jaspers their first lead of the game a little more than a minute later, beating Nordstrom with a shot just inside the right post to make it a 7-6 contest heading into the fourth.

The final frame saw the teams trade chances, but neither team was able to get on the scoreboard as the Jaspers held on for the one-goal victory.

Earlier in the contest, Canisius took a 2-0 lead on goals from Collins and Boissonneault, only to see Grinnell and Hanson answer for Manhattan to tie the game in the later stages of the first quarter.

The Griffs had an answer, as Cicci and Stefaniak found the back of the net before the end of the opening frame to restore the Canisius cushion and ignite a four-goal spurt that lasted well into the second quarter and made it a 6-2 contest, setting the stage for the Jaspers' comeback.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"We didn't execute the game plan today. We played selfish lacrosse. When we've done that this season, we've been on the losing end of the result. We've got to learn to bring it every single day in practice. We didn't have a good week in practice and it reflected in our performance today.

"It's division I lacrosse. You've got to play with heart, intensity and desire every single week. Offensively, we didn't have that today. We played very one-dimensional. That's not the way we've been successful this season. It's been through team opportunities in 6-on-6 offense. Unfortunately, we didn't do well in that area today. It's definitely correctible.

"We talk with our guys all the time about rising to the challenge because you never know when you're going to be called upon. Dylan (McNally) did a great job of running with the opportunity today. He was excellent out there in his first extended game action this season. He did really well. Unfortunately, we didn't do enough to support his efforts. I'm excited about having that 1-2 combo at the faceoff X with him and Daniel Balawejder down the stretch."
