Rowing Races Strong to Start Spring at Cayuga Duals

The Canisius rowing team completed a strong day on the water Saturday, as both varsity eight crews advanced to the grand finals of the Cayuga Duals before being edged out by Ithaca.

The first varsity eight led off the Golden Griffins' day with a time of 7:10.0, beating out Johnson & Wales' 7:28.12 to earn a spot in the grand final. Ithaca advanced to the grand final as well with a 6:47.8 time that beat out William Smith.

The second varsity eight followed with a 7:23.7 posting to move past a 7:49.0 time from Johnson & Wales. Coming in at 7:07.46, Ithaca's second boat advanced as well over William Smith.

The grand finals did not go in the Griffs' favor, as the first varsity eight put up a 7:14.1 race, while Ithaca's top crew finished at 6:53.7. The Blue and Gold's second varsity eight did not far much better, despite shaving over five seconds off their time in the second head-to-head race of the day, as the crew came in at a time of 7:18.2 in comparison to Ithaca's posting (6:56.7).

"We're very grateful to Ithaca for hosting us today. Though faced with limited water time this past week, racing today allowed us to test what we worked on all winter and during our spring training trip. It was important for us to see where we are at this point and what we need to do to improve as a team as we head into practice this week."

The Blue and Gold continue their spring schedule at the Cooper Invitational in Camden, N.J. The regatta is set for Sunday, April 7, 2019.
