Siena Holds on to Defeat Men’s Lacrosse, 9-8

Siena tallied four unanswered goals during a nearly 14-minute span midway through the second half to take control of the contest and held off a late Canisius rally to post a 9-8 victory In Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo.
 
Keenan Cook recorded three goals while Dylan Patalone and Brendan Johnson tallied two apiece for the Saints (5-2, 3-0 MAAC), who remained undefeated in league play with the one-goal victory.
 
Senior Layne Collins and freshmen Jacob Buck and Jake Lemon tallied two goals apiece for the Golden Griffins (4-4, 1-0 MAAC). Senior goalie Brad Nordstrom registered double-digit saves between the pipes for Canisius as he tallied 11 stops.
 
Trailing 6-5 late in the third quarter, Siena took advantage of goals from Jack Kiernan and Panalone over the final 1:33 of the frame to take its first lead of the contest, 7-6.
 
Cook expanded the Saints cushion to three with a pair of goals that came nearly 10 minutes apart in the fourth quarter that made it a 9-6 contest with less than three minutes remaining.
 
Buck attempted to spearhead a Canisius comeback, finding the back of the net twice in a 25-second span to pull the Griffs within one with 2:04 to play.
 
Canisius had a couple of attempts to get the equalizer in the final seconds, but were unable to generate a shot on goal during either of their last two possessions, allowing the Saints to hold on for the one-goal victory.
 
Earlier in the contest, the teams traded goals through a back-and-forth first half until Lemon recorded consecutive tallies during a nearly four-minute stretch early in the second quarter to put Canisius in front, 5-3.
 
The Saints responded to the Griffs surge as Johnson pulled the Saints within one before the halftime buzzer and Pantalone opened the second-half scoring than five minutes into the third quarter to tie the game at 5-all.
 
The teams remained deadlocked for almost seven minutes until senior Mario Caito notched his 14th of the campaign to put Canisius back in front with 3:51 to play in the third, setting the stage for the Siena's game-changing run.
 
Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"Credit to Siena for bringing their A game today. Unfortunately, we came out flat and did not have a lot of life as a team until late in the fourth quarter when we scored those two goals to make it a one-goal game, but it was too little, too late. We've got a lot of soul searching to do this week about learning how to prepare each and every week for our opponents. It does not matter what you did last week, it's about what you're going to do each and every day. We have to get back to that mindset.
 
"Siena did a great job running their defense and playing in that zone. I don't think that we did a great job as a six-man unit of clicking and working together on most of our possessions. A few of them when we did have everyone on the same page, we were able to get some really nice shot opportunities and a few goals. Other possessions, when one or two guys broke down in terms of not running what we wanted and attacking the way that we talked about this week, we struggled offensively.
 
"At times we were doing a really nice job of forcing them to settle for low-angle shots and made some really nice plays in terms of making some double teams and our slides, but unfortunately, we gave up one more goal than we wanted to today. Hopefully, we continue this trend of keeping teams in single digits, but it goes back to the fact that everything on the field has to be clicking. So, if the defense is having another good week like they did today, we've got to make sure that we're doing our part at the faceoff X, in transition and on the offensive end."
 
Game Notes
• Saturday's contest served as the 32nd meeting between Canisius and Siena. The Griffs lead the all-time series by a 20-12 margin following Saturday's setback.
• Saturday's matchup was the third straight meeting between Canisius and Siena to be decided by a single goal.
• Siena out-shot Canisius by a 40-29 margin for the contest, highlighted by a 9-3 advantage in the fourth quarter.
• Canisius was 0-for-1 in man-up situations as there was just one penalty called during the contest.
• The Griffs moved to 5-3 in one-goal games under second-year head coach Mark Miyashita. Saturday's result was the first one-goal game of the year for Canisius.
• Nordstrom recorded double-digit saves for the seventh time in eight games this season.
• With his two caused turnovers on Saturday, junior Holden Garlent moved within one caused turnover of matching former teammate Reece Eddy (2017-18) for second place on the program's career caused turnovers chart.
