Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Hobart Defeats Men’s Lacrosse in Season Opener

Chris Aslanian and Eric Holden combined for 12 goals and 16 points to pace Hobart in a 21-12 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Pinnacle Sports Complex in Victor, N.Y.

Holden tallied seven goals and added two assists while Aslanian pitched in five goals and two helpers to pace potent Statesmen attack. Ryan Archer, Stanny Gilbertson and Kyle Grimaldi all chipped in two goals apiece for Hobart.

Five players – juniors Mathieu Boissonneault and Carter Stefaniak, sophomore Ryan Cicci and freshmen Jacob Buck and Isaiah Ricketts – tallied two goals apiece for the Golden Griffins. Senior Mario Caito and junior Holden Garlent accounted for the other two Canisius goals.

In the season opener for both programs, Hobart held a 5-4 lead midway through the second quarter before goals from Gilbertson and Aslanian just 33 seconds apart ignited a game-changing spurt that saw the Statesmen rattle off six unanswered goals in 5:45 span to build an 11-4 cushion.

A tally from Stefaniak two seconds before the halftime buzzer made it an 11-5 game at the break and gave the Griffs momentum at the start the second half as they used back-to-back tallies from Ricketts and Caito to counter a Hobart marker from Derrek Madonna and make it a 12-7 game early in the third.

Aslanian would once again provide the spark for another Statesmen run, however, scoring his fourth goal of the contest at the 7:42 mark of the third to set in motion a 6-1 spurt that closed out the frame and gave Hobart an 18-8 cushion after three quarters.

Hobart stretched its lead to 11 on three occasions in the fourth as the teams traded blows until Buck and Ricketts recorded the final two goals of the game to determine the final margin.

Senior transfer Brad Nordstrom got the start in goal for Canisius and finished with 15 saves. Sam Lucchesi and CJ White combined to post 12 stops between the pipes for Hobart.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"Tonight, Hobart applied pressure all over the field and we struggled to handle it. Compounded with too many unforced errors, a game that was competitive early on got away from us. There is plenty to take away from this game. We'll use it as a learning tool for next week as we prepare for a matchup against a talented Mercer squad."
