Softball Falls Twice on Final Day of Hawaii Invite

Monoa, Hawaii -The Canisius softball team closed out the Hawaii Invite with a pair of losses on Saturday. The Golden Griffins opened the day with a 11-5 loss to DePaul before falling to Hawaii 9-6, on the third day of the season in Monoa, Hawaii.

GAME FOUR
In the first game, the Blue and Gold (0-5) took a 3-0 lead after senior Denver Keller laid down a sacrifice bunt to score sophomore Kara Paradowski in the top of the first inning. Junior Ashley Barnett helped the effort with an RBI single that scored fellow juniors Sue Vi and Cassie Hoincreasing the lead to 5-0 in the visiting-half of the second.  DePaul answered back with 11 runs on 11 hits in the fourth inning. The Blue Demons tallied two home runs, an RBI single and a triple in the home-half of that inning. Canisius had four hits in the loss, with Barnett picking up two of those hits for the Blue and Gold.

Freshman Alexis Churchill took the loss in the circle after she allowed seven runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. Sophomore Emily Nicosia closed out the game for Canisius allowing four runs on five hits to go along with one walk. 
 
GAME FIVE
In the second game, Canisius got on the board first with an RBI single from Keller that scored Paradowski. Junior Brittany Sockwell showed her bat in the fourth inning as she slammed one over the center field fence, notching her first home run of the season followed by an RBI double in the sixth inning. But it wasn't enough as the Rainbow Wahine scored in the first, fourth and fifth innings to secure a 9-6 victory over the Blue and Gold. 
 
The win improved Hawaii to 11-4 on the year. Paradowski tallied four hits, Sockwell recorded two, and four other Griffs tabbed a hit in the losing effort.
 
Senior Lauren Castro took the loss for the Griffs against Hawaii after she allowed five runs on six hits to go with one walk in three innings. Freshman Hayley Tamaro and senior Molly Hennesy also saw time in the circle for the Griffs, until Churchill made her return to the mound to close out the game. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Sockwell's home run is the first of her junior season and the fifth of her career.
  • Vi notched the first triple of her career in the game against Hawaii 
  • Paradowski also notched a triple vs. Hawaii bringing her career total to three. 
 
Canisius will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 24, when the team plays a single game against Hawaii. First pitch of that contest is scheduled for 5 p.m. EST.
