Swimming and Diving Earns Split against Colgate; Sweeps Niagara

The Canisius men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned a split on the road Saturday afternoon against Colgate before sweeping "Battle of the Bridge" rival Niagara in a dual meet at the Lineberry Natatorium in Hamilton, N.Y.

The Golden Griffin men defeated the Raiders, 158.50-66.50, while the women's team suffered a slim 121-120 loss.

However, the Griffs earned victories on both sides against the Purple Eagles. The men defeated Niagara by a 160-72 margin, while the women earned a 152-90 victory.

The men's side was led by senior Kenyon Winkky and sophomore Liam O'Connell, who both swept their respective events.

Winkky earned victories in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard medley relay and 100-yard butterfly. O'Connell, meanwhile, placed first in the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay.

In men's diving, freshman Slade Merk finished second in both the 1-meter (119.90) and 3-meter (122.65) events.

In women's diving, Canisius senior Gianna Cornelia swept her events, claiming both the 1-meter (237.85) and 3-meter (244.05) events. Senior Vinnie Costanzo took second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 216.50 and placed third in the 1-meter (220.15) event.

On the women's side, Ashlynn Gilfillan swept her events on Saturday afternoon. The senior placed first in the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle and as a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team with Sage Pollack, Kelly Burns and Grace VanBuren.

The Blue and Gold return to action on Nov. 9, when the Griffs travel to Vestal, N.Y. to take on Binghamton. Meet time at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center is set for 1 p.m.
