Rowing Battles Rough Waters at Mercyhurst Invitational

With weather altering the regatta's race slate, the Canisius rowing team opened its 2019-20 season by sending out two varsity eight boats at the Mercyhurst Invitational on Findley Lake, N.Y.

Despite the V4 session of Mercyhurst's autumn event being cancelled due to rough waters, the Golden Griffins' first varsity eight and second varsity eight crews were able to place second and third in the V8 session of the day, respectively.

The session featured a five-kilometer head race, followed by a 500-meter sprint race. The 500-meter sprint race was multiplied by five, to give a weighted score, and the times from the two portions were added together for a final time.

In the 5K part of the V8 session, the Griffs' first varsity eight crossed the finish line at 22:41.67 behind Mercyhurst's time of 21:28.92, and the second varsity eight's time of 25:00.79 was beat out by Penn State's 24:33.80 time.

The 500-meter sprint portion of the V8 race saw Mercyhurst take first with a 1:49.00 posting, while the Griffs' second varsity eight (1:59.10) narrowly edged the first varsity eight crew (2:00.45) for second place. Penn State put up a 2:06.90 time in the sprint.

Posting a final time of 30:33.92, Mercyhurst took home the top spot overall, while the Blue and Gold's first varsity eight placed second with a 32:43.92 time. The second varsity eight for Canisius clocked in a 34:56.29 final time, while Penn State rounded out the group at 35:08.30.

Head Coach Kerri Brace's Postrace Comments
"Though the conditions were difficult, we stayed internal and worked through our race goals. It's always good to see a tough competitor like Mercyhurst early on in the season, and we look forward to building upon this experience in training this week.
