Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Begins MAAC Play with Loss to Siena

Alejandro Riquelme scored all three goals and Greg Monroe made eight saves to power Siena to a 3-1 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in downtown Buffalo.

In the league opener for both teams, Riquelme recorded his hat trick during a seven-minute span in the first half to guide the Saints (4-5-0, 1-0-0 MAAC) to victory. Junior Tom Crosbie made five saves in goal for the Golden Griffins (1-7-0, 0-1-0 MAAC).

Riquelme began his barrage at the 33:42 mark of the match, playing a ball from just outside the left side of the box that found its way through traffic and into lower right-hand corner of the net.

Riquelme added his second of the match less than two minutes later when he headed home a cross from Mark Sojer before completing his hat trick in the 41st minute, depositing a Samuel Schwarz feed into the back of the net from close range.

Canisius got on the board in the 63rd minute when a cross from senior Troy Brady was redirected into the Siena cage for an own goal.

That would as close as the Griffs would get, however, as Monroe stopped the final three shots he faced to send the Saints to victory.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"The score line is not a true reflection of how close this game was. We had a seven-minute meltdown at the end of the first half and conceded three goals because of it.

"I was pleased with the way the boys responded in the second half and how they worked hard to claw their way back into the game."
