Varsity Eights, Novice Eight Lead Rowing Past Robert Morris at Yinzer Cup

Sending out five boats at the Yinzer Cup, the Canisius rowing team was able to edge out MAAC foe Robert Morris in both the varsity eight and novice eight races Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Golden Griffins beat out the Colonials in the novice eight event before the first varsity eight and second varsity eight finished ahead of their respective counterpart from their conference rival.

The Griffs opened the morning with the varsity four "A" crew taking sixth in the Varsity 4+ event at a time of 12:29.967, while the varsity four "B" boat followed them closely behind in seventh with a 12:31.323 posting. Robert Morris, West Virginia and George Mason took the top three spots in the race.

Moving into the afternoon portion of the regatta, the novice eight of Canisius dueled out the Robert Morris entry by finishing with a winning time of 13:01.767, over a minute ahead of the Colonials.

In the final event of the day, the Blue and Gold's first varsity eight crew grabbed second place with a 10:24.620 time, clocking in just under 11 seconds behind first-place George Mason and seven seconds in front of third-place West Virginia. The second varsity eight took seventh in the race at 11:34.287, beating out Robert Morris' second varsity eight by less than a tenth of a second.

"We are very grateful to Nelle Stahura and her staff at Robert Morris for hosting a great day of racing. We were thrilled for our novice eight to get out for their first race of the year and implement all they've been doing in practice. We're also impressed with how the varsity eights raced today. This fall has been about learning to row together and how to be racers and they did that today. We're excited to keep moving forward in this fall season and throughout the year."

The Golden Griffins will travel to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., for the Head of the Fish on Oct. 26, as that regatta will be the penultimate event of the fall for Canisius.
