Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Fairfield Spoils Women’s Lacrosse Senior Day, 11-8

GAME RECAP
Despite scoring four-straight goals to open the second half and erasing a 7-3 Fairfield lead, the Canisius women's lacrosse team fell to the Stags, 11-8, at the Demske Sports Complex on Saturday morning. With the loss in its final regular season home game, the Golden Griffins dropped to 8-8 overall and 5-2 in MAAC play, while Fairfield improved to 9-6 and 5-2 in conference.

The Blue and Gold bounced back in  the second half, down 7-3, as the squad tallyied four-straight markers, capped by a Jourdan Roemer tally at the 23:20 mark. Roemer's 44th goal of the season knotted the game up at 7-7, and forced a Fairfield timeout to regroup.

The timeout seemed to work well for the Stags, as the team responded out of the break and went on to score three of the next four goals.

Allie Stewart kept Canisius' hope alive as she tied things at 8-8 with 19 minutes remaining, however Fairfield's defense stiffened and kept the Griffs off the scoresheet the rest of the way.

Lauren Smolensky and Stewart led the team in points, on senior day, posting three each. Smolensky tallied a goal and two assists, while Stewart recorded two goals and one assist.

Jen Reininger also posted a pair goals along with Bryar Cummings. Roemer was held in check for most of the day but got free for a goal in the second half.

Breanna Connolly proved to be the Stags difference-maker, as she tallied six points on two goals and four assists. Kelly Horning and Diana DeVita each notched four points (three goals and one assist).

Possibly the biggest contributor for Fairfield played between the pipes, as Paulina DiFatta stole the show in the first half making 11 saves in the first frame, and ended with 12 total, as she earned the win. Rebecca VanLaeken got the start in net and had yet another double-figure save game, tallying 10, but allowed 11 goals in the loss.

The Griffs outgunned Fairfield, tallying 33 shots, as compared to the Stags 25 and Canisius controlled he draw circle (11-9) and registered more ground balls than Fairfield, 21-15.

COACH DALEY POST GAME COMMENTS
"Today's game was a game of runs for both teams. We scored a goal off the bat to start but Fairfield responded with a run and we dug ourselves a hole headed into halftime. There are things in those moments that we need to clean up to eliminate those kinds of runs. The positive is we came out of halftime and started strong and were able to come back and knot it at eight for a little while. But we went scoreless for the last 19 minutes of the game. We had some hills and valleys in the game, but it's a good lesson for us to get better."

GAME NOTES
• With the loss Canisius now trails the all-time series with Fairfield, 16-12.
• Fairfield is now 8-2 all-time when playing at the Demske Sports Complex.
• Both Roemer and Reininger extended their points streaks, having gone 45 and 35 games with at least one point.
• VanLaeken, recorded her 12th game with 10-or-more saves, notching 10 in the loss.
