Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Delaware Spoils Women's Lacrosse's Home Opener, 16-9

Game Recap
Delaware sophomore Christine Long scored six goals and fellow sophomore Mia DeRuggiero added nine assists, as the visiting Blue Hens defeated Canisius 16-9, Friday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action at the Demske Sports Complex. The win moves Delaware to 3-3 on the year, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 1-4 with the loss.

Delaware scored six unanswered goals midway through the second half, where the Blue Hens outscored the Griffs by an 11-3 count en route to the victory. Canisius led 9-7  with 19:35 left to play after junior Jourdan Roemer scored back-to-back goals 5:50 apart, but Long answered with a pair of markers in the span of 1:44 to even the score of 9-9. Delaware took the lead for good with 15:51 left on the clock after Becky Gosher found the back of the net, and the Blue Hens added three more goals to drive the score to 13-7 with 12:52 left on the clock. During Delaware's six-goal run, DeRuggiero was credited with four of her career-high nine assists.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, which saw the contest tied at 5-5 at intermission. Delaware stuck first with a goal at the 28:45 mark of the opening frame, but back-to-back goals by freshman Miranda Malvaso and sophomore Bryar Cummings 2:14 seconds apart gave the Griffs a 2-1 lead. The Blue Hens took 5-4 lead late in the first half, but the Griffs struck back with 30 seconds remaining in the frame, as Jen Reininger tallied her 14th of the season to send the Blue and Gold into the halfway point, tied 5-5.

It appeared Canisius had taken control of the contest, scoring-back to back markers following a Blue Hens goal to open the second frame, as Roemer tallied a pair with 19:35 remaining in regulation, but the Delaware went on a six-goal run which clinched the game.

Rebbecca VanLaeken got the start in net and made 10 saves in the loss, while Taylor Carpentier got the win for the Blue Hens, as she improved to 3-2 and made 15 saves in the winning effort.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"We really did not play Canisius lacrosse today. At times, we are still trying to figure out how to play Canisius lacrosse for a full 60 minutes. We need to take this as a learning opportunity and we have a response for Sunday when we host another quality non-conference opponent in Yale."

Game Notes
• This was the fourth meeting between Canisius and Delaware, with series now tied, 2-2.
• Both Roemer and Reninger advanced their point streaks as, Roemer has now gone 34-straight games with at least one point, while Reininger has tallied at least one point in all 25 games of her Canisius career.
