Softball Falls in Extras on Last Day of Spartan Classic

Game Recap
Towson's Kaylen Minnatee's RBI-single to center with one out in the bottom of the ninth pushed across the game-winning run, as the Tigers defeated Canisius 3-2 Sunday morning on the final day of the UNCG Spartan Classic in Greensboro, N.C. The win for Towson, the team's ninth in its last 10 outings, improved the Tigers to 20-4 on the season, while the Golden Griffins fell to 3-18 with the loss.

Canisius trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth inning, but there, the Blue and Gold knotted the game with a pair of manufactured runs. Sophomore Morgan Altman helped cut Towson's lead in half to 2-1 with an RBI-single through the left-side of the infield to push teammate Ashley Barnett across the plate, and moments later, freshman Erin Hufford scored on a sac-fly to center off the bat of junior Molly McGuire.

In the top-half of the ninth, and with a runner placed at second base, Canisius had a chance to take a 3-2 lead as sophomore Gianna Degaltini ripped a ball through the right side of the infield, but Altman was thrown out at the plate, ending the threat. In the bottom of that frame, Towson broke through, as Minnattee drove in teammate Nicole Stockinger from third with a base hit. Stockinger not only scored the game-winning run, but was also credited with the fielding assist on the play at the plate which ended the Blue and Gold's scoring efforts in the ninth.

Five different Griffs had a hit in the loss, with Altman and McGuire earning the only RBI on the day. Senior hurler Erika Mackie was the tough-luck loser in the circle for the Griffs after she allowed three runs, one of those was earned, against seven hits in 8.1 innings of work. She also fanned five and walked three on the day. Senior Olivia Baltazar earned the win in relief for Towson, which has now won 20 games in 21-straight seasons.
